Cannot open Lightroom CC Catalog

My computer crashed while Lightroom CC was open. After my system restarted, I tried to reload Lightroom, but got an error message "cannot open My Pictures catalog because a previous version is still open." To open Lightroom I need to create a new catalog, but I'll lose all my development adjustments and keywords; about five thousand!! How do I fix this?

Go to the folder where your Lightroom catalog is, look for a file with the same name, but a .lock extension, delete it. Lightroom should now open.

I was able to open Lightroom with a different catalog, but it appears that
the .lock catalog has my most recent changes that were not backed up.
Is there a way to unlock the .lock extension?

The locked extension is on a file that is NOT your catalog... it is a "LOCK" file.... if you delete the lock file then your old catalog will be able to open.

Notice the SIZE of your old catalog file and the LOCK file... should be a huge difference.

As an example, on my computer, my .LRCAT file is over 700 mb....BUT my .LOCK file is 77 bytes... it is a placeholder....nothing really in it... if it is present then your catalog is locked.... if you delete it then the catalog is open for business.

If you don't want to delete the .lock file just rename it by changing the extension. That way LR will not see it when you restart it.

If you delete or rename the lock file, Lightroom will continue to default to your new catalog on open, so you will need to tell Lightroom to open your old catalog file - go to Lightroom/File/Open Catalog or Lightroom/File/Open Recent and select your old catalog, from then on it will remember.

I'm continually impressed with the knowledge you guys demonstrate. Seems like I can't get out of my own way when it comes to sophisticated post production software.

Thanks to all. Your information was correct. The problem is solved.
I lost some Develop settings, but not too much.
