Canon 400mm F2.8L II USM (Bird Test).
Just stepped back inside from my front porch and loaded my first bird taken with my new 400MM Lens. Used a 1.4 X extender on this one. Shot at f4(extender stops the 2.8 down to F4.) Definitely not the sweet spot which I'm guessing is about F8- F11. Will try to post the 2X extender and 400 with no extender( in a few days).
Straight from the camera. No edits were applied.
Shot with a Canon 5D comes in about 560 MM. Taken at about 20 Yards and cropped only.
I bought this lens for sports but thought I would see how birds look.

Bird on a wire
Russ, this photo is awesome straight out of the camera. Please let me know how you like this new 400mm 2.8L. Is it prime?

It is a Prime lens. I'll let you know how its working in a day or two. Just going through some test now and thought I would post a sample.

Beautiful! I must admit slight jealousy! Jen

Well I'd say it's a pretty darn good bird lens. Great pic.
Really great pic !! But a starling ?? Come on ..... ;-)
I was considering the 400 2.8 but can't carry it like I can the 300.
I've wanted that lens for a while. Not in my current budget. Probably not in my future budget either. Nice shot too.
Thanks for comments everyone.
Hope to find a better looking subject next time.
She did strike a nice pose though.
I'm really new to bird shots. Thanks for letting me know what it was BigBear

Nice Photo Russ, glad to see ya back. If the sports don't work out there's always Wildlife. I finally got my 300mm prime, haven't taken it for a test drive yet, See you around.
Damn, I've been working on not having lens lust and then you show me this...and straight from the camera too!!
Amazing shot, thanks for sharing.
Superb shot. Nice sharpness. I had a friend do similar experiments with the extenders and he felt that he was better off just shooting without them, and cropping to compensate. He felt it was sharper that way and that the extensions did nothing for him.
That said, he is shooting with a camera with a lot more resolution than mine, and so he can afford to crop. I'm only shooting with a Canon 40D, but he's got the 5D MkII.
I'd be curious if you will try without extensions and crop and see if you like that just as well, if not better.
Les,
I did try without the extender. Caused a tad more graininess without extender with a greater crop. I'm going to try the 2x extender when the weather clears.
Martin,
Going to be in and out of the forum. If I'm Posting I'm not shooting!
We'll stay in touch
Thank you all!
