Just stepped back inside from my front porch and loaded my first bird taken with my new 400MM Lens. Used a 1.4 X extender on this one. Shot at f4(extender stops the 2.8 down to F4.) Definitely not the sweet spot which I'm guessing is about F8- F11. Will try to post the 2X extender and 400 with no extender( in a few days).

Straight from the camera. No edits were applied.

Shot with a Canon 5D comes in about 560 MM. Taken at about 20 Yards and cropped only.

I bought this lens for sports but thought I would see how birds look.

Russ, this photo is awesome straight out of the camera. Please let me know how you like this new 400mm 2.8L. Is it prime?

Well I'd say it's a pretty darn good bird lens. Great pic.

I've wanted that lens for a while. Not in my current budget. Probably not in my future budget either. Nice shot too.

Thanks for comments everyone.

Hope to find a better looking subject next time.

She did strike a nice pose though.

Superb shot. Nice sharpness. I had a friend do similar experiments with the extenders and he felt that he was better off just shooting without them, and cropping to compensate. He felt it was sharper that way and that the extensions did nothing for him.
That said, he is shooting with a camera with a lot more resolution than mine, and so he can afford to crop. I'm only shooting with a Canon 40D, but he's got the 5D MkII.

I'd be curious if you will try without extensions and crop and see if you like that just as well, if not better.

Les,
I did try without the extender. Caused a tad more graininess without extender with a greater crop. I'm going to try the 2x extender when the weather clears.

Martin,
Going to be in and out of the forum. If I'm Posting I'm not shooting!
We'll stay in touch

Thank you all!

Russ
