The lizard was shot with a Nikkor 105mm macro and I believe a 36mm extension tube at f25 @1/60. He allowed me to approach to about 4 inches. I was hoping he would inflate his throat, but he never did. He exited after 2 shots. The photo was also cropped a bit.

Hi, I love image 1. I am not sure he is a gecko. I believe he might be an American anole.
I did a little research, you are absolutely correct. If it gets in front of my camera, I take its picture, I hope the exposure is good, and often I move on without knowing what it is. Thanks for the education. Bill
