Was on assignment for Colorado Community Media and a group of suburban Denver newspapers. This was from the Maxine Ehrmann Invitational Track & Field Meet in Thornton, Colorado 4/22/16. Nikon 7200, Nikkor 70-200 2.8 @ 195mm. Manual, 2.8, 1/1000 ISO 100 with a monopod.

Nice the subjects are in sharp focus and we know what is happening, the story is obvious. But it seems just ahead of the key shot where both girls are touching the baton. Were you using continuous shooting?

You caught some great expressions but cropped their feet. That is an important part of the image. My sense is you had the lens zoomed in too far at 195mm. The important thing is to the four corners in the viewfinder and review the image on your screen.

This is a great action shot, more interesting than the actual handoff because of the anticipation that we can see in both girls' faces.

There is suspense here--what happens next? A perfect handoff? A fall? A miss? A stumble? All these actions are possible, and we can see them in the girls' expressions.

To me, this is a great capture. Congratulations.

I also like that you didn't crop out another girl's elbow at the left of the image. That shows that these girls are in hot pursuit. Some might not like that lead elbow, but I think it belongs there to give the complete action of the event.

Another thought: You have inspired me to go to some local sports events and try to get some action shots, something I've never been very great at.

You make a very good point about the action. I see your point.

Given that, It looks even better to me cropped when cropped closer. Expressions are more visible etc.
