I am very impressed with that photo also! I don't get any "fancy" woodpeckers here in NC.... Reminds me of the one that kept pecking on the vent thingy on the roof of our mountain place. I would chase him off and the next morning he would be back at it again waking me up! Went on for days.

Thanks ! There should be some Pileateds in N.C. They are mostly in old growth forests which are rapidly dwindling ....

I got this shot a couple months ago.

This male was using last year's Red-Bellied nest as a bachelor's pad and seemed quite skittish ! ( tho I was wearing no camo but using my car as a blind.

Presently, a Wood Duck is using this cavity ! - hope to get some kind of shots from this.

Today, I found a new Pileated nest site at Riverbend Park here in Florida. I saw the male and female go in but did not see or hear anything regarding babies ( using binocs) - so maybe they are sitting on eggs still.

I am curious to know how skittish they are and how much camo I should be using to approach the nest ?? - and any other experienced info I should know ?

Great shot. You also caught the eye wide open and clear, no odd shadows.

As I stated earlier, your shots are fantastic. My shots of a similar woodpecker were less successful but I did, after 2 years of chasing him, get a few of which the following were the best I got. They are nowhere as good as yours. He is skittish all get out and wily. I used a Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 70-300mm lens (at 300mm). I have about 30 shots of him over the last 2 years and he dives to the far side of a branch or hides in the bushes as soon as I put the camera to eye in all but these 2.

MORE ON BABIES: AT FIRST I TRIED STAY AWAY FROM THE NEST BUT AS THE BABIES GREW THEY HAD THEIR HEAD OUT ALL THE TIME. THE PARENTS CAME ABOUT ONCE AN HOUR. THEY FEED THE BABIES FOR 3 TO 5 MINUTES THAN CLEAN OUT WASTE FROM THE NEST. THE PARENT WERE SHY WHEN THE BABIES WERE SMALL BUT FEEDING TIME BECAME MORE IMPORTANT LATER. THE BABIES GOT FED NO MATTER WHO WAS WATCHING. 30FT WITH A CHAIR, CAMERA(7D WITH A 70-300 LENCE) AND SCOPE WAS NOT A PROBLEM. I GOT FEW GOOD PICTURES OF THE PARENT FLYING OFF WITH THE WASTE.

By the way did you use your rig for any of the shots?

Yes, I used the pod part as a"carpod" - where I slip it down between the car door and the seat resting on the floor and then can make quick height adjustments up or down as needed - in this case I had to recline the seat to get my head low enough to be able to point the camera high enough !
