Tethered capture in LR

I have used tethered capture infrequently. A couple months ago the D800 was recognized intermittently and I replaced the cable. It worked for one session and then wouldn't recognize the camera in tethered capture. However, it does recognize the camera when I import directly from the camera. Any thoughts?

Hi Bill,

How long and number of a connection cord(s) are you using? My photography work station is about 15' from the computer. If I use a single 20' USB cable LR works great but if I use 2 10' cables plugged together it only recognizes the camera about 20% of the time and 3 6' cables never work. Take care & ...

If your using 2 cables you might need a booster, but for your short use I would just get one good one (tether pro) is good.

5 meters (16'-5" ) is the max specified cable length for USB, so you are probably just at the edge of reliable operation with the 20 foot cable. When you use 2 tens, there is an impedance discontinuity at the connector between sections which will cause reflections on the bus, likely causing your issues. The same is true (only worse because of the 2 connectors) when you use the three 6' sections. If you could probe the end of the active cable with a fast scope, you could likely see the reflections which cause the errors and intermittent operation. This is the exact issue that caused me to purchase a CamRanger...

Thanks, the issue is the same weather a 10" cable or 6". I have tested both.

I use Canon but saw in a tutorial on YouTube that if you tether with Nikon and you have a CF card in your camera, which contains images, LR goes through the entire card and only shows the camera being connected, once it has finished going through the card! Take out your CF card or make sure it's empty before connecting your Nikon camera for tethering in LR. Let me know, if this solved the problem.

Thanks for the effort but it didn't work. Both cards were empty and reformatted. The computer recognizes the camera, i photo tries to open when I turn the camera on and connected, but when I go to LR and try to begin tethered capture, it says "no camera".

Too bad, I thought I found your problem! The only other thing I can think of is maybe update the firmware on the camera.

I think it is time for a call to Adobe customer service! Thanks.

If you are plugged into a hub, plug directly into the computer.
