Thank you Mr. Chinn. Some of what I have learned here I am starting to absorb.

Frank, this is a very nice image. A good capture of personality. Just a tad blown in the hair highlights, but otherwise good pose, composition, and great eye contact with the subject.

Thank you Bob for giving comment. It is as if I caught him in between thoughts trying to figure out what expression to put on in this one. Being at their level helps tremendously with eye contact. Maybe a strand or two blown but if anything I think it an enhancement for this particular shot.

Not a lot wrong with it Frank and you did not really make clear what you wanted feedback wise.
So I'll wade in anyway. The whites of the eyes have a blue caste on my monitor if its good on yours then down to my lousy equipment. If indeed they are blueish paint white on a new layer set to Soft Light and reduce opacity to suit.
Personally not bothered about slight blowing of hair it seems to suit the image.
I would take the trouble to clean up a few skin blemishes looks like two cuts and one small spot. Also if it was mine I would take down the pink on the end of the lads chin.
Nice shot with nice engagement with your model

Thanks very much for wading in Mr. Spad, I will in future posts start asking. I will take another look at the eyes thank you. As for the cuts, this is the rough and tumble look of a little boy. No glamour shot here….white scar by right eyebrow already first set of stitches so I left all in for character. He was a bit flushed from soccer so also left the pink cheeks and chin. Thank you for being so observant and thorough.

I don't know if you had control over the individual. Was this someone you know, asked to pose or just photographed? If I had control, it would be a different look entirely.

Billyspad comments are technically correct but not as important as other considerations. Some of the best images I have seen were not sharp or technically correct but they were compelling for use of light, composition and story. I think this image has those components but more would have been better such as a side look and the use of hands for additional expression. There are so many options to consider other than this static approach which I think is fine but not compelling. I think you see this as well as you mentioned the term .. boring.

If you are in control, don't be afraid ask for specific poses as would a photographer with a model. In harsh light conditions, pull out a diffuser. They are easy to carry about, and fold up nicely.

Sorry for the confusion Mark. He is one of my grand sons just coming off the soccer field and was a spontaneous shot. Boring was referring to a previous grand kid post http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-383919-1.html did not want to bore everyone with my home movies if you will, or grand kid shots. I don’t post them as grand kids so much as I do just people pictures, they just happen to be my grand kids. Read my post to rmalarz above about him being expressionless. I have been trying to get some eye contact shots lately. I appreciate your comments and look forward to more. Hope will look and comment on future (or past for that matter) posts of mine.

Okay, I understand. It is expressionless and that is an emotion. I get it but is that what you visualized or intended to capture? You say that you want to get eye-contact but in what way? The best family images I have seen, you would never have known there was a photographer... And what I mean is nothing is posed. The shot was taken and you feel a part of the picture as opposed to being far a part from the picture. I don't know if that makes sense but it is this intimate quality that I find to be a necessary component.

I did not intend anything, he was coming off the field glanced at me and I snapped the shutter. I take what I can get eye contact wise, they may be looking at me but (they rarely look directly into the lens) and they don’t look long. I get what you are describing about not knowing a photographer was there and see why you might think this shot posed. Thanks for your detailed reply Mark.
