Going for the 2nd weekend on Wendsday. We have never been before. Staying in the French quarter. Taking a weatherproof Oly tg4 and a Sony a7r. Is there anything that is a must see and any advice about jazz fest we should know about. We are not going to have a car and we do know that it can and will rain. Thanx for your replies! PK

I used to live in NOLA (2007 - 2013). Beware of two things about Jazzfest: the music included has lots of non-jazz stuff; in my opinion, they should rename it the N.O. Food Fest!😜 But go have fun!

Where comfortable clothes that can get dirty. If it's wet then wear rain shoes. The entire festival is staged on a horse race track so it can get quite muddy if it's wet. No umbrellas are allowed so bring a rain poncho.

If you bring chairs then you are only allowed to sit no closer than a designated area to the stages. This can be a further distance away and there will be people without chairs standing in front of you as they are allowed to be closer to the stages. It can get very crowded for the popular lead artist in the evening so my advice is leave the chairs home. You can bring old blankets or sheets to sit on if you like and still be close to the stages.

There is not much shade so bring sunscreen lotion, hats and sunglasses. You also want to travel as light a possible. There will be plenty of food available at the Festival which highlight our cities best delicacies. Come hungry! I don't remember what all is allowed inside the festival so see the website below for what you can bring in.

Come and enjoy our great city. You will love Jazz Fest. It offers a variety of music and food found nowhere else. Be ready to dance and meet the friendliest people on earth! Ask any locals where to find what you're looking for. We love showing off our great city and making new friends!

At night don't wander into secluded parts of town and beware of your surroundings. Just like any big city we have our share of crime, but you will be ok if you stay in the populated parts of town. Uber drivers will take care of you and will be a more affordable way of transportation than cabs if you need transportation. The streetcars are also a fun alternative and very affordable. They only accept cash but doesn't cost much.

Be prepared to take many pictures as the French Quarter and Jackson Square have many opportunities. You will find all kinds of entertainers and musicians there. Also make your way along the river front which you can walk to from the French Quarter for a scenic view of the Mississippi river and the vessels traveling it. You will also find a shopping mall at the Riverwalk which you can access from the river front.

The architecture of the buildings in this area also make nice photos.

If you have never taken a ferry ride across the Mississippi river then you will want to at least take one ride. There is a walkway for pedestrians to board and a great view of the river for photos.

See this website to learn more about the Fest:

And of course we all would like to see your photos when you get back!!

The Jazz Fest has grown from what used to be the locals playing their best "Jazz" and "Blues" music to what it is now. There are many different stages playing every genre of music there is. Check the schedule for who is playing when and on what stage on which day. Most "locals" will map and plan a schedule of who they want to see when so they don't miss a particular show they might want to see.

DavidM, I checked the URL you listed in your otherwise excellent lengthy post on Jazz Fest. That URL is for the French Quarter Festival, which occurred some 3 weeks ago.
