Hi I am a photo novice, and am getting my feet wet with a slightly used Nikon D5100.
I have never used anything but a cell phone and simple point and shoot cameras.
No doubt there will be hundreds of questions very soon, as it arrives tomorrow.
Just have the basic 18-55mm lens coming with it.
I ordered a spare battery, charger, 32 gb DHC card and reader and bag to carry them in so far.
The limits of point and shoot cameras in low light and at a distance etc....is what made me decide to get a real camera

Welcome ....we have all the answers...and then some Steve!
Thats what I was hoping to hear.
I feel like I should have gotten a simpler first camera, but couldnt see myself buying a camera to use for a month or so till I learned, then buying a better one.
My friends are no help. I told them I wanted a real camera, an one said just buy a better phone.
My first question is what lens do I need for macro shots?

You have an excellent kit there to learn with and it will serve you well for many years. That lens will focus down to about .8ft focal distance. For true macro work you would need a lens that offers a macro setting but you will be amazed at what some shots taken a foot away will look like with the kit lens. Take the time to learn your camera and how to shoot in non "Auto" mode and how to control depth of field. Most importantly read the manual, you can download it from Nikon online. Your results will astound you I am sure. You have chosen to get into a great hobby. Congratulations
camera comes today, and hopefully in time for a show am attending.
Reading the manual is a good idea.
I will see what the lens has to offer alone with regards to macro shooting.
I have seen some screw on attachments on amazon for cheap, but not sure if they are crap.
I wrecked my back and cant work anymore, and have some good days that I want t fill with something that I can physically do. I thought entertaining myself with photography might be fun, as I have always enjoyed it albeit with sub par equipment.

Hello Steve, welcome to UHH.
Hi Steve, welcome to the group. You will love that camera once you get the hang of it. Practice, practice, practice. I'm still using an old d5000 that I converted to an infrared camera and I still enjoy using it.
Hi guys and thanks for the warm welcomes!
Al the accessories are coming, and I tried it out and watched several instructional youtube videos.
So far I am impressed with it n all auto settings.
Still wondering if I should have just gotten the D3300 instead, but oh well.

Welcome to the forum!!! :-D :-D :-D
Welcome to UHH Steve, glad you joined us. You should get several years of fun out of your D5100. I would suggest the Nikkor 105mm macro lens. There are several sections to the forum, photo gallery, people, sports, street, critique, etc. One section that might interest you and I suggest you post your lens question there is the macro section. Go to "Home" at the top of the page and click on it. It brings up all the sections of the forum. Then you just subscribe to the ones you want to.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.
