Got a notice to upgrade my Mac to El Capitan but was fearful of having issues with LR and On1. Any problems out there in Photoland?
Thanks for the responses in advance.

I jumped on El Capitan the instant it was available for my iMac.... I also am a Photoshop & Lightroom user - no issues.

Thanks for the quick reply. Did you do a backup before the upgrade?
I use PS6 and LR with added ON1touches. I had some issues with the last upgrade but worked out of them.
Since I have read many of your past postings, I know you know your poop.
I will do the upgrade tonight.
Thanks again.

On my system Time Machine is always running, so my last backup is only at most an hour behind....

Since my images are stored on an external disk as well, I really did not hesitate about upgrading to El Capitan.

For me, at worst I would need to reinstall Lightroom and Photoshop from the CC plan.

This of course does not mean that a backup is not prudent before an OS upgrade - if you run Time Machine all the time then you may already be covered if you are sure the backups run and are current.

  I can second this comment. Just make sure you back up first, then install the new operating system. I always do that and I have never had to reinstall the old system.

I did have a problem but called Apple and they worked it out. No problem. I back up on 2 external hard drives. Only because I had a external drive go bad and lost pictures.

I recently got a new iMac with El Capitan, and hence Photos (not iPhoto). My previous iPhoto library converted to Photos. Then I got LightRoom/PS CC, and have not been able to import any images from Photos. Lightroom was able to import the Events structure from iPhoto, for 17000 photos, but everything was empty for a total of 0 photos. I have not yet had time to try customer service from Apple or Adobe, but I'm very disappointed.

You will find that if you have made edits in Photos and want those finished images in Lightroom you need to EXPORT them first from Photos then import into Lightroom. There is no easy link from Photos to Lightroom.

If it just the original files from photos that you want, you can just locate them within the photos library structure on disk and import into Lightroom.

Again, no super easy one click way to go from Photos to Lightroom - even though Lightroom will read the iPhotos & Aperture Library structures.

Some wise advice:

Check with the software publishers' websites for compatibility of various versions and operating systems. You might want to be sure you are using the very latest version of your application software before upgrading your operating system.

Some older Adobe apps will not run on a later version of Mac OS X than was available when they were released. For example, Photoshop CS3 died after upgrading from OS 10.6.8...

(I'm not familiar with On1.)

Be sure you back up your ENTIRE drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner or another tool that copies EVERYTHING on the drive — even all the hidden files — to another drive. You need to test the backup for boot ability and software functionality before upgrading the OS on your main drive.

Before upgrading, run Disk Utility from another partition or startup drive and Repair the drive.

After upgrading, use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on the startup drive.

Your media (files) are most certainly still there. You may have to re-import everything. If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment and they'll help you.
