Was going through some photos and saw this with the Canon 100-400 and the 2x converter on it. I lightened it a bit but no other work on it.
Used a canon 7D camera. Cranked out to 800mm.
Hotel was about 3/4 mile away from my position.
Second shot is same set=up at San Francisco Peaks from Jerome and they are about 70 miles away. Lots of haze.
This lens does not look too bad even with a 2x converter on it.
Manfroto 190 aluminum tripod.

The real test would be filling the frame with a small object with a lot of small detail. Shoot a bird at 800 mm that fills the frame (distance is not important) and look at the detail.

Sorry, not an avid bird shooter.
For me distance is what 800mm is all about as I could not have gotten this shot except from the distance. Many other opportunities also for me require a long lens, can't afford an 800mm L lens so I was pleased that this combo works so well and if there are other canon users wanting to know what can be done this is a real example rather than the usual pontificating.

Another item to keep in mind is that no Canon EOS camera bodies can autofocus this combination. So, shooting most anything live and moving with this manual focus lens + extender combination will be a challenge.

True, this was manual using the screen on the back of the camera.
