Hey, Editor (or Admin or Boss or whatever...), my humble suggestion is to delete the Chit-Chat.

There is enough malarkey or gob-shite or venality in this forum as it is. It's supposed to be about photography. Letting the political crazies loose makes me want to punch the "delete" button on the whole rigamarole.

Oh, and go ahead, all ye who disagree...I can take your barbs.

Some people are afraid of free speech. Some aren't.

I value this site because I get to 'meet' people I'd not meet elsewhere: people I'd never 'meet' if I huddled together with those whose politics exactly match mine. Here, we are united solely by a love of photography (I'd never have found the site otherwise).

Why are you so angry? Anger is normally based on fear, so what are you afraid of?

I'm afraid of censors, the small-minded and those who think that they have all the answers (especially when they don't understand the questions). But even then, I try to argue rationally, rather than trying to shut people up.

Cheers,

R.

Is someone forcing you to look at the chat forum?
Don't like what you see, don't click on it. Simple.

And as far as this being a photography forum that is true but it is common for all types of forums to have 'Off Topic' or 'Chat' sub forums.
I know of a TV/Movie forum that has an "Other" forum, also a gun forum, a motorcycle forum, and various hot deal sites all have areas for off topic chat.

No big deal. Again, don't like it, don't look at it.

And you would be the first to complain if a topic of general interest, non-photography, were posted in another part of the forum.

I check the subject/forum

If I don't have an interest, skip it. If I click and comment, I know I'll get mail on it for further views. Then I click 'unwatch' and all the buzz goes away.

As said, 'You don't like it' don't look. Simple huh ?

I couldn't agree with Roger more (get it Roger Moore). The site is mainly Photography, but the Chit-Chat provides an opportunity to debate other things and, provided it's respectful, I think it's healthy. It gives us an opportunity to learn more about each other and share ideas. All the Chit-Chat isn't political, those just happen to be the most passionate items. I think it's generally very fair and respectful.

If you don't like it why don't you just unsubscribe from it? There is that option for you. Or if you don't like it you could just leave the forum. No one is making you stay where you don't want to be, that's one great thing about this site.

Sounds like this is mainly a troll thread just to stir up some trouble around here anyway. There must be a reason the OP wants us to throw our barbs at him so why give him that satisfaction?

Well Roger, who told you that "Anger is normally based on fear"?? Actually it may be based on disgust, revulsion, or perhaps justified if one is insulted for an opinion. As for the rest....
What is "rational"about joining a photography forum,as you say for the purpose of meeting people,"united solely by a love of photography",and then USING that forum to stir up political issues, get people emotionally upset about something other than photography, stir up trouble intentionally,(as they know what they are doing),and cause insults and animosity?
So you're "afraid of censors?" Where are the censors? Obviously there is plenty of free speech in this country,so this is not a rational objection to someone's wish that the chit-chat be eliminated. What good use is it to anyone when the forum is used in this way to drive people away?
And last of all, i wonder if it's "rational" to accuse someone with a different opinion from yours and then call yourself "rational". Maybe in "polite society" the old advice for people to get along is best, not to discuss politics, religion, or the other subjects not best suited to congenial friendships. And last of all Roger, what does this all matter to you if you sit in France telling us how we should think? The only thing international about this forum is/was,as you said,"united solely by a love of photography". Political views expressed as "gospel truth", no matter where they come from, tend to be divisive in any large group of people, but especially overheated in an election year. But what is that to you,you don't live here, vote here, pay taxes here, perhaps your fear of "censorship" is a little too well developed to be "rational". Try to consider then that the OP here had some valid reasons to request that this chit-chat section be removed. It was, after all,a sort of after thought, not part of the original forum, and to claim that other sites for other reasons have their own chitchat is just another bit of erroneous "reasoning"that we should do something simply because other people do elsewhere.

WOW! That's terrible to let something upset you when you don't even have to click on it in the first place.
My time is too precious to sit and waste it looking at things I don't even like.
(It didn't take a lot of smarts to figure that out)

Well Roger, we finally agree on something.

We should never fear the free exchange of information even when it is repulsive. History teaches us the alternative is far worse than being offended here and there. Embrace individual liberty. I realize this is a privately owned site and the owner can freely do what they please but the principle of liberty applies whether it be in the private or public sector.
