Does anyone know of any compact or bridge cameras that shoot RAW as well as JPEG? I'm looking for something for an upcoming long trip abroad, rather than lugging my SLR & lenses. Hopefully, something with significant zoom capabilities and would allow manual settings as well..... would like to stay under $500 if possible. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

Canon G12.

I've shot Nikon SLR/DSLR for forty years, but bought my wife a G12 last year because it does shoot both. It's a fantastic camera, and I end up using it as much as she does.

My vote would be the Panasonic Lumix FZ150.

It also has an articlulated screen, hot shoe and shoots AVCHD video through a nano coated 24X Leica lens.

Bought this for my wife for her nature/birding hobby and the results are great.

The SX40 doesn't shoot RAW right off the bat. I have heard of some software you can download onto your media card that will allow it with this camera. I had a SX40 but never did do this download so Google it if you need more info. Cheers.

Ditto on the Panasonic Lumix FZxxx line. I've used them in the past and they consistly get good reviews. It's also hard to beat a Zeis lens. Using the electronic viewfinder (evf) is almost like using the ttl features of the dslrs. Just keep in mind that any of the bridge cameras have certain limitations that you may be used to on your dslr. Recommend Googling the top two or three cameras you select and do side by side comparisons.

Panasonic Lumix FZ-150 shoots RAW and has a huge Leica-glass zoom.

The Nikon P510 sounds like it would fill your needs, and has the longest zoom available on it, 24-1000mm (thats 42x!). Nikons ED glass and VR. It also has Macro with focusing as close as 1 cm.
