Dave,
Your image called instantly to mind the phrase: "...a man of gentle, kindly
mein."
Dave in SD

Thank you Dave !!! I really do believe Paul was sincere about the blanket offering and I can see where you would feel this way. The phrase, although, I'm not familiar with would make a great title.

Expression is everything (and the rest is processing :-) ). The fact that you can evoke that sort of reaction for the camera indicates that you have a gift for portraiture.

The only thing I notice about the processing is that the irises and whites of the eyes look a bit funny. Did you add grain - and can you mask the eyes from it? Or is it the sharpening that's given that grainy look round the eyes? A softer touch to the eyes would suit Paul's general demeanour.

Thank you R.G. for your much appreciated compliment !!!

I think I got over anxious and sloppy where this image was concerned. Yes, I did use a grain layer and didn't erase the eye area. Shame on me !!! I will be reposting a revised version. Thanks again.

Great expression captured Dave that's for sure. Does need a little refining in PP I think. Frank has mention the halo and R.G. has pointed out the eyes need some work.
Another 30 mins in Photoshop and it will be a truly great shot.

Thanks Billy !!! Yes expression is number one key and I agree with everything mentioned although, it always takes me more than 30 minutes. I will be reposting another revised version.

Nice shot, Dave, you captured him perfectly. Also enjoyed the narrative about how you got this shot.

Thanks Walt for your comments. A narrative is always an addition to a photo which I sometimes struggle with.

First rate. Doesn't take a back seat to the best of the rest I've seen of this genre, period.

Thank you Neil for the outstanding compliment !!! It is much appreciated.

Terrific shot. Love the way Paul looks. From a photographic standpoint, I think it is cropped too closely on the left (probably the way you had to get the shot) and could be a bit lighter with a little brighter highlights. Otherwise, very well done.

Thank you abc !!! Yes, you are correct on the crop. I have another version I'm posting which would be more centered rather than to tight on the left.

While in San Antonio for a brief visit Paul approached me to ask if I needed a blanket for the evening. I'm thinking .... maybe I should shave and get a haircut. Blending in has its advantages for me. I suppose I will always have a home on the streets.

Hi Dave,

Yes, such a gentle looking man. Nice shot with room for some improvement on this one, I believe.

I agree with Frank2013 about his eyes & around them needing brightened/more light because they appear too dark for my taste. That would also bring some attention to them and perhaps a little selective sharpening there as well. I also feel like the whites and blacks need separated just a tad more to make his beard and mustache a little more vibrant or attention getting - not a lot, but some.

The one thing I noticed immediately, for my eyes were drawn to it right away, was the small piece of braided cord on top the center brim of his hat. Tone it down just a tad or two so it isn't the brightest part of him, and less attention is drawn to it.

I actually like the bright spot in the background above his camera right shoulder which promotes separation from the background.

Now, I have to admit that the complete darkness of his camera right hat brim just looks to me like you lost all detail and needs to be lightened some way so it doesn't just look like a black blob on the camera right side of his head above where his ear would be. Don't you really agree with me on that one? There just is a neglect of separation there that bothers me - not really sure how to combat that one.

I like the man, the idea behind it, the gentleness displayed by the image . . . however, I know you have done better in the past and this one just needs a little more work and polishing as Frank2013 indicated. Thanks for posting, as usual, Dave.

My Best Regards,
Tom

Hi Dave, br br Yes, such a gentle looking man. Ni... (show quote)

Thanks Tom and yes I do agree. I agree so much that I have another thread with a revised version that still needs some attention to the eyes but haven't decided on how I am going to attack it as of yet. I have some ideas but in one sense I think I may make them worse.

Thanks Don !!! I have been moving a little slow with the computer the last couple of days. I have been thinking about putting together a slideshow and posting the link for everyone to view.
