Hello,

I would like to photo edit this picture of my mother of when she was younger. The picture is scanned and makes her face look bumpy as well as the background. ( I would like to take away the "bumpy look").

The only photo editing program I have is picasa, and the air brush takes away too much from her pretty facial features.

Does anyone have any ideas in how to help "fix" the picture?

Thank you for any advise.

Nita

I can only tell you what I did. It was a photo of my parents and my daughter when she was about 4 yrs. old. I scanned the picture into the computer and tried to pp it. To put it simple it came out worst than terrible. So I laid the original on the table and took a close up picture of it. Then put it in photoshop and cropped it down to the original picture. Lightly pp it and it came out pretty good. If your original doesn't show being bumpy you might try something like this.

I was able to clean it up a little, by using Adobe Camera Raw. Maybe someone good at layers can do better.

It's a bit too fuzzy to do much with but I adjusted contrast a little, applied dodge tool,(photoshop) set for midtones 50%; brush size 28 to lighten the eyes, and defog to take some fuzz away

When you want to manipulate an image which needs to be scanned from a print, textured, or otherwise, always scan the photo at very high resolution, like 600 dpi or higher, so that the retouching process becomes much easier, and also has the benefit of being reduced in size for final delivery, which improves the quality.

Below, is a few minutes in Photoshop.

A little retouching.

The photo is very grainy. Here's my attempt.

your scanner picked up the texture of the paper in the original image due to the angle of its light as it scanned. That is why you see the bumps on the photo. If you take it somewhere they may be able to scan it with a different system which will then not show up the texture as much and improve the sharpness as well.

I had another thought as to getting some quality into this image. The original is printed on a textured surface, and this is confounding your scanner, making the effect you see and several have tried to correct.

It dawns on me, a good macro lens on a good DSLR, appropriate lighting such that through the lens, you cannot see the texture of the paper, only the image, and then take the picture... THIS will solve your issue.

I simply had to jog my memory a bit. I have been there and done this before.

I'm just adding mine to the list because I always enjoy this type of challenge. Ran it through noise reduction, played with contrast and sharpened. Hope you like.......

This is my attempt, but I don't know if it's any better than some of the others. I don't really know what all I did, just played around. Very pretty lady.

Thank you for the advise Farmer64. I will give that a try. The picture was borrowed from my sister, and I told her after I scanned it, I would send it back to her, and I did. When I get the chance, I will try it with the original, but in the mean time, I will try a copy. Thanks again for the advise. It is a good thing to know in regards to future pictures also.
