A classic use of light. Also solving a classic metering problem. Also , probably the single best rock and roll song by the five satins.

Very cool. I like using black backgrounds for flowers too. Occasionally naturally occurring available light, most of the time I bring flowers indoors and shoot against black cloth and then adjust as needed with Photoshop. Sometimes leaving a bit of dark gray and charcoal on black in the background. Really makes flowers and the like pop!

"Boberic",

Yes, I guess white on black or black on white is rather tricky to meter and shoot. I'd try spot metering the blue flower center and then place it in a zone III or IV, i.e. EC -1.5 to -2 EV. Then jack the contrast way up in Ps ACR or Lr ACR, and make final adjustments with Ps or Lr. I use Ps CS6 actually.

Below is one of my "black background" flowers. This one was natural though with just low light levels in the background leaves and stems. And not nearly as hard to shoot as the OPer's. Actually it was accidental and gave me the idea to shoot flowers indoors instead with black backgrounds. It is rather old too, captured 2011 and I hope I've learned a bit since about digital. Film photography since 1977.
