Anybody ever us a "slip-on " adapter for filters ? If so, did they work good? I would think that one would be so much easier than fiddling around with a screw-on.

I found them handy but after a while it would seem they had 'worn' out and get loose. Had one fall out, but soon after I switched cameras and the slip-on was of wrong size. Never upgraded.

I used to use the Cokin filter system on my old film camera- it did work well, easy to use for sure and did it's job.

I have heard of magnetic filters and holders. Apparently, the holder is metalic and the filters have little super magnets making filter placment and snap. I have no first hand experience with them though.

I posted this today under "Xume Adapter/Holders -- First Impressions"

On a scale of 0-10, these things are an 11.

Without question, the adapters and filter holders have the most precise machined threads I have ever seen. Zero binding and as slick as you-know-what through a goose.

I am also impressed at how the adapter magnets pull the holders right into place. Each adapter has a lip around the edge. You do not have to carefully line it up. Just get relatively close, let go, and it pulls and snaps the filter or cap into place. Every time.

I have used Xume since they came out. They are especially handy in situations where you need to swap out filters quickly. I use them with ND filters when shooting fill flash. I use them with CPL filters. And they are really useful with 9/10 stop ND filters; you can compose and focus without the filter, then just pop it on, set exposure, and shoot.

The drawback is that on some lenses, you will get vignetting at the widest setting. To avoid that, use a step-up ring and larger diameter filters.

I do not, however, leave them attached to the lenses. I use them when I'm doing a shoot where they are useful, but otherwise they stay in the filter bag.

My filters go in the bag too. Which means with leaving the Xume adapter attached (which is sensible), I had to buy a couple of extra filter holders for my lens caps. In the future with a GAS attack, the more Nikkor lens I buy, I'll also have to buy an additional Xume filter holder ($11-$13) for the corresponding cap.

I went to a site for the Xume adapter and am a little confused. What I want is a slip-on for my 57mm filter that I can in a flash , slip onto my 57mm lens.. Am I on the right track ? what I see on ebay is confusing - or is it me? In other words, I want my filter ON the adapter , then just slip it on in an instance...

Maybe a camera site would be more helpful....

Wouldn't the XUME be a good choice for that very thing? XUME is a magnetic adapter - one part is attached to the lens, the other is attached to the filter, so you then slip the filter on to the lens using the magnet isn't that what you want?

Video on this site shows it all....
