Take a look at the Manfrotto MT190CXPRO4, excellent height and stability in a very lightweight package. A bit pricey though.

This one:

At 3.8 lbs for the head and legs, it's hard to get a more stable platform for even twice the price (Gitzo or Really Right Stuff).

The Manfrotto is expensive, heavy and not even close to being as stable. That center column takes it's toll on both stability and weight.

When deciding on a tripod. image magnification and focal length is the defining criteria for stability, not load capacity or tripod weight.

I bought my CT3472 (the CT3442's bigger brother) here - http://www.feisol.com/

But Adorama, B and H and even Amazon sells it now.

And the budget would be...?
Do you need a head as well or do you own one...?

Get the steadiest tripod and best head you can for your money. If it's heavier then others, spend $20-$25 on a decent shoulder strap to carry it. It REALLY DOES make a huge difference and you won't even notice carrying a couple/few extra pounds.

Check out the MeFoto Globe Trotter. I just went through the process and ended up getting it on advice of B&H. I am very satisfied with it portability and stability for my D800 and 70-200 2.8. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/926478-REG/benro_c2350q2k_2_series_carbon_travel_tripod.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1158126-REG/induro_clt204_2_stealth_carbon.html. I have an Induro carbon fibre tripod. They are made to hold quite a bit of weight, which is good for stability (e.g., even if your gear is relatively light weight). Always look at the weight bearing info and get the highest you can afford.

Check with MT Shooter, a regular on this site his store carries the Next brand tripod which are very well built. I found a used nest travel tripod NT-6324C which converts to a monopod. These are great tripods check them out.

If you are on a limited budget like I was when I purchased mine you might be interested in the unit below. Not the steadiest because it is very light weight but it has held up well for me with enough stability to do most of my shots up to about 300mm. I do use remote triggering on most shots if I can. I do plan on getting a much heavier tripod in the future for my Macro work when I'm using a 180mm macro lens. I'm looking at a Benro Aluminum model that will handle up to 44 lbs for that as the carbon fiber models are cost prohibitive for me..

How much are you willing to pay? You can get a tripod for as low as $15 upwards to the hundreds of dollars. The cheap ones work OK, just not the same quality or features. I own a $15 and a $150 tripod. There are so many choices.
