You need the dock for firmware updates and to make adjustments and set up the custom settings. I have the sport version of the lens and I've used the dock a few times. They're not expensive and i feel it was worth the cost.

It's like a oil change for your car. It keeps it running properly. So knowing my lens was "Tweaked" it is worth it. Can I see the difference..NO

Tough question especially for me, because I find the concept of needing an extra piece of hardware to have a $1000 lens properly focus repulsive. However, the firmware update did noticeably increase auto focus speed. That made it worthwhile for me.

I bought the C lens first followed by the dock a couple months later. I did a firmware update and set up the two programable settings. Next I am going to mess with the focus at the focal lengths I use the most. Definitively worth it to me but I like tech stuff.
