Is this what they mean by large capacity memory card?

I just bought two of these at Costco. The packaging is absurd and a waste of materials. And considering the product had to be picked up from a security room after purchase and not on the floor, what is the point?

Yes, a dirty wall; dusty PnS lens too.

that would be a medium capacity card. they make a 64 and a 128 that would be considered as a large capacity card. I prefer the 32, as I do not want a weeks worth of photos on one card, all your eggs in one basket so to speak. also, a lot of merchandisers put the 32 on sale, so you could buy two 32 cards for less than one 64. as to the packaging and the security, it is unfortunately the world we live in today.

It's to prevent theft, mostly from the employees. I buy all my memory cards from Amazon and they always come in regular retail packaging.

Oh God, I was talking about the size of the packaging as a joke, not the actually byte count of the card. Of course they come in huge 128GB capacity. I was joking about the giant packaging. The UHH is really too serious at times. The gearheads really need to go outside and take some pictures. Note, I said they were under lock & key. The computers then should come in house-sized boxes to prevent employee theft.

That's why the administrators provide us with these :) to give us a clue.

Apple has generally been rather moderate (if not downright stingy) with the packaging of iPhones. But I remember a time when each box was placed in a large (9X12 or 10X13) padded envelope creating a package which not only could not be smuggled out of the building, but could not be carried around openly without inviting a security check. Thieves would try to conceal the items in their original boxes in garbage bins, lunch boxes, etc, but could not do so with the large envelopes. The envelopes were tear-proof, as was the sealing tape. Visual coverage was rigidly enforced, even to the point of installation of hidden cameras, access of which was known only to key personnel. Apple employees and on-site contractors were subject to greater scrutiny than at one AEC site I worked at, and attempted theft was a prevalent problem. Success rates were low; employee turnover in certain areas was significant. The large packaging of small items was an extremely effective deterrent!

Would everybody like to take these packaging engineers and wrap them in their own packaging sometimes to see if they could get out? :) :)

The large packing is to prevent theft. BTW 32GB is not that large now days.

The card is a 90 MbS. If you shoot bursts on continuous shooting you might want to go with something faster. I use at least 150 mbs. And please realize that these cards are so easy to put into your pocket and walk out with. (no, I know you would not do it but everyone else would) That is why the extra security.

Unfortunely we as readers sometimes cannot determine when a poster is talking tongue in cheek.

A few years ago, a 32GB card would have made headlines. Now, that's my standard size.

As for the packaging. Imagine trying to deal with packages that were just large enough to hold the card. Stores need something that is large enough to get a grip on and also large enough to keep customers from pocketing handfuls.

Picking it up from security is just - security. I've seen that in several stores.

LOL no that isn't a large capacity card but large packaging. In theory, it keeps the honest thieves from stealing the memory cards. In reality, the thieves will use a box knife to cut the card out of the plastic and leave the retailer with lots of empty cardboard. So, most retailers keep the Large Cardboard and their memory cards locked up so that the customer has to ask for them.
