PSE-9 to PSE-10 ?

Question? When installing PSE 10: Will PSE 10 overwrite PSE 9; or should you uninstall PSE 9 before installing PSE 10; or can you install Both version's on the same computer (if you have enough memory) so that you can still use PSE 9 while learning PSE 10?

Yes, PSE-10 will install inself in a seperate folder on your harddrive. During the installation process..watch for which folder it wants to install into, it should ask. Be sure it says something about 10. I had PSE-5 and upgraded to 10 and my 5 still works. One thing it may do however, is overwrite any icons on your desktop, or you may end up with two. This I don't remember...but it did install 10 separately.

Thanks james,
What about photos in the organizer in PSE-9. Since PSE-10 will be installed completely separate than '9', I assume I will have to manually move photos to '10', right?

That I can't anwser since I don't use that feature. You would think there would be a way to import old data since Adobe constantly changes their programs. Let me go launch to program and see if I can find your answer.

Following is from the online manual for version 10. It looks like you can update automatically or update your catalog later (either way).

Converting a catalog from a previous version

When you open Elements Organizer in Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 for the first time, you are prompted to convert the current catalog of the previous version. When you click Yes, the catalog from the previous version is converted and renamed.

Note: Before converting a catalog from a previous version of Photoshop Elements, it is recommended that you back up the catalog using File > Backup.
If you have not converted catalogs earlier, use the following procedure to convert catalogs from previous versions.

Select File > Catalog > Convert.
In the Convert Manager dialog, select the catalog from the previous version.
Note: Catalogs saved to a folder in a location other than the default location do not appear in the Convert Catalog window automatically. Click Find More Catalogs, and then select the folder where your catalog is located. Catalogs located in that folder are added to the list of catalogs that can be converted.
Click Convert.

Not germaine to your question but to your avatar. Like a Marine, there is no such thing as an ex-Seabee. Once a Seabee always a Seabee. And, welcome home, Brother.

No. You don't need to "move" photos. PSE10 will find the images on your computer and it will ask you if you want to import the catalog from PSE9 to PSE10 - or do you want PSE10 to make a new catalog. If you've already organized all your images in PSE9, you want to let PSE10 import all the data from PSE9. If you never used the Organizer part of PSE9 then it won't matter but it will still be faster to let it import the catalog from 9. If you have not been using PSE9 to download images from your camera cards, then let PSE10 make a new catalog. It will search all your drives and find all your images. This will take it some time if you have a lot of images. PSE9 and PSE10 does NOT move or change the locations of images. Only YOU can manually do this. It will only find the images as it is doing it's first install and then it will find them again if you invoke a command to do another search later.

Welllll, you're right. I successfully installed PSE-10 yesterday and played with it for an hour or so. I think I am really going to like the upgrade. Today however, when I got on the computer, (a news site), I noticed a new little icon in my toolbar with a spinning arrow. Uppon opening it I learned that it was in fact elements searching and finding all of those photos you mentioned! ALL OF THEM!!!; Advertizements, icons, pictures from emails, etc., etc.. It had been doing this for 16 hours and indicated that the count was 80+ of 3,700+/-. I shut that operation down immediately! Now I will figure out how to clear all of that stuff off of the organizer and manuallu bring in ONLY those selected photos I wish to keep. I hate when these computers and software try to out think me or control my actions. Hmmm, kind of like the government.

Yes johnr999, you're right. There are no X-Marines, X-Seabees or any X-military as far as I'm concerned. It defines and becomes who you are and what you believe. Maybe "X" was not the best choice at the time (20+ yrs ago) but I thought it differentiated me from those that were still actively serving. In my heart, military affiliations, career and military disabilities; Those who know me realize that I am not really a "X" anything. Thank you for your comment.

I converted from PSE 9 to PSE 10 recently.
In a sentence, it could not have been easier.
All I had to do was follow the instructions & the entire procedure took almost five minutes.

I'd usually say "good luck," but luck has nothing to do with it.
The conversion is user friendly.
