Wow. That was really enlightening. I shoot almost entirely in RAW because I want the best quality to work with. I only convert the photos I've decided I like the most and have edited. I should really think about converting everything to TIFF or PNG when I transfer to the computer.
I was told by a very well known wedding photographer that your average client will never know the difference between a photo taken in RAW & a JPEG photo. Most if not all professional print shops like "Nations Photo Lab" only allow you to download JPEG file formats unless your transferring direct via FTP client And only so their techs can do the post processing.
Also, websites, including Ugly Hedgehog, will only accept JPEG format so anything you want posted needs to be converted first.
Well, I don't have clients (unless you count myself), but I am a perfectionist. I do convert any photos to JPG that I want to upload or make prints of, but I don't convert until after I've decided on the keepers and done the editing. I can't get past the fact that if you make changes and re-save multiple times, you start to loose quality. There are quite a few pics that get left on my computer in RAW format only because I don't think they're good enough to print or share but I can't seem to delete them. I will have to think seriously about storing them in TIFF or PNG though. I hadn't thought about the different RAW formats out there. If they standardize, I could loose access to some data. Admittedly only the ones I had already deemed unworthy, but still.
that is a good article-- another fun thing about png-- graphics from png can be converted and used in ps layers to enhance or make a wacky pic--
