Cathy - best part of your post was the 'dead spider ' part. I HATE spiders.

Nice photos but remember, 'bigger and closer' isn't always better. Sometimes you need to step back so we can see the surrounding interesting parts of the shot.

Welcome and keep shooting

Welcome to the forum, Cathy.

Don't listen to Sarge - spiders are good.

I like the macro shots of the spider and would like to see more, if he's still around. Not that he's gonna run away or something, but sometimes external forces intervene.

One of the issues with macro shots is depth of field. Notice the second picture has the legs closest to the camera in focus but the body is not? In order to get more of the spider in focus, you have to increase the depth of field. Would love to see more pix of the dead spider from different angles with more DOF.

If the dead spider is still there, pick him/her up with tweezers and get a more isolated location, like on a white cotton pillow case on your dining room table and pose him/her for shots.

Welcome! You will learn a lot here and have fun doing it!
BTW:As someone who was bitten by a Brown Recluse 25 years ago,the only spiders I want to see are in pictures or squashed on the sidewalk.

Happy birthday, Cathy! Hope you had a great day! Now on to your bugs...one thing I learned eons ago was that if you want to shoot photos of bugs, on thing that helps the little critters cooperate with your desires is to catch them,if possible, and get them in a jar. Then put the jar in the freezer so that they go into sort of suspended animation while you get your tabletop prepared and your camera on a tripod in place. Once you get your set prepared, then you can take them out of the freezer and place them where you desire but do it quickly as they will soon defrost and decide to leave the area. I suggest you use a tweezers or a pair of forcepts to handle them gently...you don't want to squish the little varmints...also be careful with your hands as they can sting or bite as they defrost. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your hobby...I loved my job as a navy photographer/photojournalist...been retired now since 1991 from the USN and since 31 Aug 2011 as an x-ray tech.

Sounds like you don't have much sympathy for the dead ones, either...:)

Welcome, Cathy.
Looks like yu're an adventurous experimenter with a camera.
I'm relatively new at digital photography too, and the information I've received on UHH the last 8 months was a must-have supplement to the books I have.
There's also a section here dealing with macro-photography.
Have fun, beware of the grouches.
