Clipped wings in the sunset - 1946

A year after the Nazis surrendered, my buddy and I were walking back to our airbase in Bavaria when we passed some junked Luftwaffe aircraft in a field. I noticed that a beautiful sunset was in progress, and I still had a yellow filter on my twin-lens reflex so I urged him to ignore the "Danger - Mines" sign (that was just a bluff by the MPs to keep scavengers away) and climb onto the plane for a silhouette shot. I had enough time to get two shots before the sunset faded. A month later the photo won first prize in a base photo contest. The MPs ignored the obvious trespass. The runners-up were all pretty scenics, but the judges were Army Air Force officers with other interests.

Richard, this is a very beautiful shot. All of my B&W film is printed by me on paper carefully eking out the highlights and shadows then I photograph it with digital for posting. I never work it digitally!! Nice shot, very good composition and power. What a unique record of the past. ;-)

Thank you for your comments, SS! I wish I could post a really good print of "Clipped Wings" but I don't have that luxury right now. My negatives are boxed up because I moved from NJ to Colorado in 2009 and have been having medical problems. This post used an original 70-year-old 2-1/4 x 2-1/4 inch contact print, scanned by an Epson NX215 and enlarged by Picasa. Other than cleaning up dust spots, no dodging, burning or other PP work was done on the image. I wish I could bring out what that negative could really deliver, using the techniques you describe.
