Im sure this is a recurring problem all over the Internet but it's out of control on the Hog!!
We see it constantly...., a grammatical error, a misspelling or just the Brown Truck parked at the wrong house!!!!!!
And here it comes, with sirens a-blazing just like an old Untouchables episode, the Police, the Cops, the Feds or what ever you like to call these small minded attention starved individuals, with guns drawn and ready to correct everything from a spelling error to an imprecise sexual position and somehow justifying it to themselves and others.
Like wedding crashers, they completely destroy a good post and the OP usually scurries off while the feeble small minded cop spars with anybody and everybody as the post is destroyed and all the cops manage to do is heap gobs of attention on themselves and how intelligent they think they are.
It seems some of theses cops were actually intelligent and professional people in their former lives and jobs, but no longer needed and starving for long lost attention.
Are they impressing us with their huge intellect?
To me they just sound like Tarzan after his time was up, scaring the crap out of people by yodeling in malls and parking lots long after the show was off the air!!
So to all you Tarzans out there, learn to PM, rather than come on here embarrassing people, asking what countries they're from, where they went to school, yada, yada, yada.
Have the decency to PM your corrections to that individual, not use a passive form of advertising and shove it in everybodies faces, even though in sure we all need it.
Let the OP ask their question and let those that sincerely want to help do so without blowing an otherwise good post to small mindedness smithereens!!

I'm gonna put out the soap box so all you cops can stand on it and try to justify your small minded actions while some of us chuck rocks at you!!

Has your Post been destroyed by a cop? Or are YOU a cop?!
Hopefully all the cops here won't suddenly be unable to raise their broken arms. Maybe someone can PM them and give them an invite!!
At least in a 1/2 hour I'll know just how many mistakes I've made!!
Is this a rant....., no, it's a very serious problem.
Or maybe I'm just a cop cop!

I have lots of other stuff to do. But, one has to realize that punctuation saves lives. There is a huge difference between

What's wrong with eating gramma? My wife's a gramma and she's still a tasty dish.

I for one absolutely agree. this is supposed to be a forum for photography inquiries and sometimes photography related bragging, no matter whether it is a photo one is proud of, or a new piece of equipment they have purchased. if someone doesn't like it, ignore it. this is not a forum to correct someone's grammer or political correctness.
I know I have been guilty of backlashing when attacked, and I will try to keep it to a minimum in the future, but I also know that I have reported a post to the administrator and received no action. I wish that they would respond or remove some individuals that are abusive on this thread.

Yeah, I suppose it was. Sorry!

I do agree with you and your post, BTW. I was once an English teacher in Prague and to see the blatant spelling errors and grammar mistakes on the forum grates on my nerve, (I only have one) but I usually let them go knowing that some people either haven't had the benefit of decent teaching or are simply in too much of a hurry to bother proof-reading what they have written.

Sharpshooter,
As strange as this might possibly seem to you on your first review of this, I'm with you virtually all the way!

I was the one, as you know, who asked the OP, sissil, on his MPD TOPIC created on Apr 4, 2016 titled Long time reader SEEKING ... as to the nature of his spelling of a particular word, and I my inquiry was genuine, NOT intended to be snide as some self-appointed policemen evidently took it. Evidently, there's no such to these "policemen" called the benefit of the doubt. That my intentions were benign were clearly evidenced in my reply to a lady Hog early on in the thread. I thought the matter was over with, but then some jacka$$ referred to me as a "Spelling Nazi." Then some simplistic f*rt tried to climb aboard the gravy train to "bash" me. I apologize if the preceding sounds like I'm just a whiner, that's not the point (as it didn't hurt me.) Rather, my purpose in recounting in brief what happened is for people to know that mine was a brief conversation on the side, which, as we all know, happens on a daily basis at the Hog. Unfortunately, it was twisted and distorted by these "policemen" to attack me and as a result of their doing so, they effectively HIJACKED THE POST!

In particular, one individual, already well-known for his arrogance and rudeness, self-righteously took on "the cause." I think he should work on political campaigns, really I do! He has an excellent manner of interpreting words in only one possible way AND selectively, of course, discounts all logical arguments simply by ignoring them. This medium is tailor-made for him, as some will read only what he posts, potentially arriving at the wrong conclusion and castigating me as a result. Such actions by him & his ilk are vile! I don't know what fraction of those who read his posts subsequently reviewed ALL of the related posts in the thread. If this was a TV debate, I'd easily tear him to shreds by reviewing each and every statement by all parties, repeatedly if necessary to confront him with it, demanding he explains his reasoning. But I won't do that, because in the act of ceaselessly replying to his attacks, I would effectively be a an instigator of hijacking someone else's topic.

My approach to such unwarranted attacks has been to reply once, maybe twice, to each "attacker" and then declare that I won't address that individual again for the remainder of the thread. This way, I "phase" myself out of dealing with a subject that wasn't part of the OP's intended discussion.

I suggest that one reviews page 6 of that topic, where you, to my silent triumph, expressed that the thread looked like it had run its course. Of course, a particular self-righteous individual, dedicated to his "holy cause," then tried to dovetail into SS's comment to look like he was just "another one of the guys." Yeah, right! I'm curious to see if he's man enough to fess up and apologize both to me and the OP.

Well, given the precedent you just set, SharpShooter, of issuing a combination rant and legitimate topic for discussion, I'm not ashamed to admit that the above could be construed as a rant as well, under the same "umbrella" as yours.

The only items left to mention are: a. I'm open to constructive, realistic comments and suggestions as to my current approach in dealing with these "policemen," and b. if those in the Hog use this Topic to attack me without substance, I won't be the only who'll dislike it.Because then you'll be highjacking SharpShooter's topic.

SS, as for your suggested guidelines, I'd like to address them later in this thread. I thank you for posting this Topic.

Your post reminds me of a book a friend showed me years ago in which famous historical statements were punctuated the way they were enunciated. Thus, Queen Victoria's remark when told she would be queen was not really "I will be good" but "I will be? Good!"

I looked at the rules for this forum, and feel that the first one is the most important - Please be polite. It covers a lot of ground.

The second one should be IMHO, no quoting more than the first line of any post. Anyone interested will find the original and read it. Ooops --- Please ;)

Very well put, SS. I know for a fact that some well-respected members of the UHH have cut back on their participation here and taken their talent and expertise to other photography forums.

My personal response to the sort of members to whom you are referring is actually NO response. I simply ignore them. It is my firm belief that if more of us would ignore these attention seekers, at least some of them would just go away and haunt some other forum. They want attention - ANY attention. If they receive it, they WILL stick around.

That's my vent and 2 cents.

Bill, thanks for the suggestion to quote just the first few lines of a post. I tend to forget to do that. Not such a big space waster if it's just a short quote. Big space-waster if it's a long one - like SS's OP on this thread. Sorry!

The grammar and spelling patrol members should be aware that a lot of the seeming errors are, in fact, the work of the nefarious 'auto-correct'. Save yourself from an undeserved attack by proof reading your stuff before hitting 'send'.
