I placed an order with Amazon just now, and I could get free Prime two-day shipping, or I could pay $15.96 for next day shipping. It used to be $3.99 per item for next day delivery.
When I order from Amazon, I select the Free (3 - 5) shipping. There's a warehouse here in California near my residence, and the item always arrives in 2 - 3 days.
Jerry, In certain markets (local in metro areas), Amazon is now offering same day delivery for FREE! (with Prime membership) Mark

A lot of products are drop shipped from suppliers other than Amazon but sold through Amazon and they don't have the same leverage with the shippers as Amazon does. On another point there are still suppliers that make up for their profit margin by adding a little extra shipping charge called "handling".
Tucson just joined the same day delivery program. I have a Samsung tablet and sensor cleaning swabs arriving today. That is so much better than driving to a store!

Wouldn't the cost also consider the shipper? UPS, USPS, etc.?
