I just watched my DVR of this HBO Documentary on his life. I knew he was a controversial photographer, but as yet I had seen too little of his work to have a solid opinion on him. That changed this morning. Wow, such range... petals, portraits and porn. I can see why Jesse Helms was adamantly opposed to having tax dollars fund his exposition. I do not agree with him, but I can see why he would be livid.

Mapplethorpe was a photographic genius but when he started exploring human sexuality the uptight government folks lost their minds and tried to make him out to be the son of Satan.

Sexuality upsets lots of people, even today. He claims to have not had any photographic training. Wow.
