Hello,
I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX300 for the past 3 years. It is not under warranty. I have been getting a flashing messageE:62:11 which after contacting Sony requires a company fix. The cost would be about $185.00 with repair and shipping. Question: What is the forums opinion...Do I send it in to fix OR do I buy a new camera???
Advice/suggestions please.
Thank you,
Mary
The repair would be through Precision Camera, slow service. What does that camera sell for used? Could you replace it for less? I see they are only $249 brand new from Best Buy. Personally, I would get a new one and keep yours for parts, but only you can decide how best to spend your money.

Mary, the simple answer is, can you purchase a new camera, that you'd like as much as this one, for $185?

Have you tried a "factory reset"? Google or owners manual for answer of how (no idea myself for that camera). Also try Removing Battery with power switch On?
This camera may be out of production. If you can get the camera for $249, then it may be wise to upgrade to another camera spending more money. Sony doesn't sell refurbished on the same level as Nikon or Canon. If you are willing to spend more money such as $450, I would recommend the Canon SX60 with a focal length of 1350mm, a viewfinder, hotshoe for flash, and it shoots movies and RAW. Your choice though.
Looks like Best Buy has them on sale for $209 (new!)

If it broke after three years, I wouldn't get it repaired or buy the same model. There are thousands of choices out there.
Always consider the actual price of the camera so that you can make a comparison with the price of repairs. If the camera can be bought at Best Buy for $250 brand new and the repair is $185 that means that for $65 more you are buying a new camera with a full one year warranty from Sony.
There are exceptions to this like when the persons really loves his or her camera and is willing to pay the price of repairs.
People sell broken cameras every day on ebay. Repair places want parts.

This is only the way I calculate a repair v. replacement.
If the repair will cost more than 1/2 the price I paid for something...buy a new one. That's for pretty much ANYTHING I have bought.

Upgrade to the Sony RX10 II can't go wrong,,,,,

I totally agree, Indi. As a retired industrial mechanic, that is the general rule industry wide.
MaryAO, it's time for a new camera. There is a plethora of options. I feel there is a camera out there to fit your budget and needs.
With Sony the cost to repair is always high that's why I don't buy Sony.
