I just dropped my new Canon EOS70D on it's nose. I think I probably need to buy a new lense, although the polarizer took the brunt of the fall. I ned advice about what lense to buy to replace the 18-135 kit lense that was on the camera at the time of my mindlessness. I have a 100mm Macro and a 70-200mm zoom. My goal is to replace the 18-135 with a higher quality lense. Ideas for me to round out my lense portfolio?

24-70 is a great lens to have. It's on my camera 70% of the time.

With a topic title "SEEKING advice", I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses, but not from me as I'm a Sony user. I have a question and then an admittedly self-serving request.

1. You consistently spell the word "lens" as "l e n s e." That makes me think that you've either trained your spellchecker to accept that spelling or, if there is none operating, that you spell it that way. What country were you born in, or perhaps more precisely, which form of English were you taught? British, American, other? I ask merely out of curiosity as studying language is one of my hobbies.

2. Again, the following is self-serving, though I believe many other Hogs who review the Newest Topics list would benefit, would you possibly consider, when you next create a New Topic, using the brand name of the camera/lens system in the Title section IF your post pertains to use of that equipment? For example: Long-time reader, first time posting, Seeking Advice on Canon lenses!

My point is that a number of MPD Topics do concern one particular brand camera or lens mount. By simply putting Nikon, Pentax, Panasonic, Canon, Sony, or Fuji in the title, alot of Hog members, who in general only own & actively use one, or at most two different, camera/lens system(s) will know at a glance which Topics they needn't take the time to investigate.

Thank you,
lev29 :-D 8-)

Thank you Eliot. That is one of the lenses I am considering. 24-70mm f/2.8 How different will my range be to go from 18-135 to 24-70mm? I take a lot of large vista landscape shots.

Hi lev29, Thank you for your thoughtful response to my first UHH posting! I will follow your advice on my next one. Merriam Webster shows lense as a variant of lens. I do understand that lens is more universally accepted. I got my start in the world of photography at age 15 while living in England. Perhaps that is my decades later my brain still insists on calling the hood of a car a bonnet, I pull on a wooly when I am cold and I prefer to go on holiday for a fortnight, not just a week!

For landscapes I use a 16-35 but the 24 end of my 24-70 isn't bad. The 24 on your camera would be 38 equivalent which isn't the best for landscape. Canon also makes a couple of 16-35 (f/4 and f/2.8) lenses which would be better for your intent.

Also, I suggest that you get your camera checked out by a qualified Canon repair shop. Even though it may appear okay, a bang like that could cause some misalignments or worse.

I dropped one of my Canon cameras one time. It ruined the filter thread, but the camera and lens continued worked just fine. I have both the lenses you have, and also have the 24-70. You might think about the 24-70 or the 16-35 2.8. I have heard the 17-40 f4 is a better lens, but I shoot a lot in low light so I want the 2.8.

Depends on what you like to shoot, but in general, hard to go wrong with the 24-70 f2.8L, (or if too expensive, the 24-105 f4L). Then to finish the trifecta, the 16-35 or less expensive 17-40. IMHO, good, fast glass is always a wise investment, regardless of what body you chose in the future...

If studying language is one of your hobbies it is best that your turn a blind eye, as you will soon realise that no one on here is taking an exam. Being a retired secretary I know exactly what you mean.

Thanks, but I was being sincere. I realize there are typos and some who are just plain bad spellers. I don't bother with the latter. 😉👍🏻✌🏼️😎

Many of my Canon friends (I don't have many mainly cause I am a Nikon snob) shoot the sigma 24-105 f4 ($899) out of B&H. They seem to really like this lens (even though it is a Sigma, oops, Nikon snobness showing again).

Are there any camera shops in your area where you can try several of the suggested lenses? The 18-135 is a generally well regarded lens that covers a very useful range on an APS-C camera. All the lenses mentioned are good lenses but they all lose out on either the wide angle or telephoto range compared to the 18-135. You might spend a chunk of cash and find out that you miss what you had.
