Problem With Nikon D810 and Pocket Wizard

I put my pocket Wizard into the hot shoe in transmit mode and it would not trigger a remote pocket wizard nikon flash/pocket wizard combination when I took a shot. If I pressed the test button it worked.

I then connected the pocket wizard on the camera to the 10 pin connector with a cable and it worked properly.

Am I missing a setting. I dhould not have to connect to the 10 pin connector.

Does the flash work when mounted to the camera? If not, then perhaps the camera hot shoe isn't "hot".

Good question. I put the flash on the camera. It did not fire.

I then put my finger on the flash button on the left side of the camera and turned the rear control dial which changes flash modes. Apparently I had it set in "flash off". In normal mode it works fine and flash fires. Problem solved.

Thank you.

1. What model of Pocket Wizard are you using? Plus III, or FLEX 5, or what?

If you are using Plus III, you can reverse the PW's and see if it works. Verify the receiver is set to receive only, not retransmit. Make certain they are on the same channel. Make sure your remote flash is on Manual, Plus III's do not carry TTL. Also make sure these are both in the same zone. The letters ABCD on the front. The same letters should be light up on both PLUS III's.

Flex5's make sure both are in the same channel and zone. You may need to plug in your cable and verify they are programmed as you think they are. Do you have an AC3? If so is it turned on for the zone your 5's are in.

Then of course verify you have a fully charged set of batteries in the remote flash and PW to remove the possibility of a slow recharge, or random firing.

If you've checked all this and still not working please tell us what model flash and PW's you are using.

Problem solved-see above. Camera has a "flash-off" mode. Thanks for responding.

Yea glad its working. Sometimes it's the littlest things that trip you up. My response came in at the same time before my screen showed that it was solved.

Happy to hear the good news! I was hoping that might be the problem. Eazy-peazy fix!

If people actually took a little time to actually read the manual of their apparently far too complicated toys most of us wouldn't have to waste our time spoon feeding the lazy sods........

What a prince you are. You're likely the only person I know of who has never made a simple mistake. You must be very proud.

Upgrade the firmware on the pocket wizard. It is needed to work with the D810.

This is not someone making a mistake. It goes on several times every day, people asking for help with features of their equipment which is covered very simply and adequately in the manuals that are freely and easily available to them if only they took just a little bit of effort to find out.
If I need to find the answer to something I endeavor to research it myself, that way not only do I inevitably learn a whole lot of other stuff but when the subject of my query proves to have a "duuuhhh!" light bulb moment at least 30,000 others out there don't shake their heads at my stupidity.

Bluntly stated, but a good point.

Good point. Let's abandon this forum garbage and stick to reading manuals. They're so exciting.

I, for one, enjoy this forum and am not bothered a bit by questions that might be on page one of the manual. I've met a lot of good people on this forum and will continue to learn from the questions of others, and, once in a while, answer one myself.

If posters bothered to use even a minuscule portion of their God given grey matter they would, with not very much effort at all, find an entry on how to switch on BBF on page two of their manual under the heading "how to switch on BBF".

The time, patience and good will of most of the folk who respond would be a great deal better spent on questions a degree less lame than some of those posted here.
