Lightroom download and exiting problems

It seems that Lightroom problems are a constant topic in UHH. My problems I have not seen before. First, I cannot seem to get my photos from my card to Lightroom. I have in the past - I have used Scott Kelby's book - but now they only want to go into Apple Photos. Hate the program. If I open Lightroom I get a screen I have never seen before that asks where I want to download from but does not allow me to indicate my camera.
If I open Lightroom I am not able to get into my collections nor add a new one.
When I go to exit, the only way I can do this is to Force Quit.
I loved the program when I could use it, but somehow I screwed up my settings and am a loss as to what to do next.

You have to tell Apple Photos NOT to automatically launch and load. Do this in the Photos preferences panel. You can tell it to launch something else or nothing at all. This has to be done, it appears, while your camera or card is connected, I don't see this prefs panel unless something is hooked up.

I have it set up to launch Image Capture. I don't like using Lightroom to download photos, I'd rather set up my folders, preview in Image Capture and download the ones I want to the folder I want, then import them into LR from there.

Here's an article that may help you.

IF you are having to use Force Quit then Lightroom is hanging for some reason. Get Apple Photos shut down so that is is not trying to load then see if LR works better.

Thanks for your help. Solves one problem, but others still remain . I need someone local who is familiar with the program.

I know what you mean. It can be good, and it can be bad. By "bad," I mean you have to do exactly what it wants, how and when it wants. Then it will be good.

STOP Force Quitting programs, this should only be a last resort. You need to find out what is going on. Force Quitting prevents a program from cleaning up after itself. Eventually this may be an issue especially with database programs like LR. You could permanently lock your database, or simply damage it. Please let us know what version of OS you are on and what version of LR you are using. Also include a snapshot of your import screen so we can see what you see. On a MAC pressing the SHIFT+COMMAND+4 will allow you to drag an outline around your import screen. Then you can add that to your next post.

More info is needed so we are not guessing at helping you.

Someone local... Doesn't help that your location is just listed as Maryland. I am only 10 miles from Hagerstown MD, but more than 200 from Ocean City!

Open iPhoto. Click on iPhoto in upper left corner. Click on 'Preferences'. Click on 'General'. Change the preferences as shown here. That will stop iPhoto from opening unless you tell it to.

That was the first thing I did days ago. Photos is a non problem now.
I exited Lightroom just now and it took about 5 minutes to close even though I told it not to back up now.

If you press the shift key, the command key, and the number 4 key (all at the same time), a little cross hair thing like the cross hairs on a rifle sight will appear on your screen. You can use your mouse to drag that around your screen to enclose a box and when you take your finger off the mouse button you will hear a click and an image will appear on your desktop. You can attach that image to your post to this forum and we will be able to see exactly what you are seeing on your screen.

Test to show that previous post works.
