First attempts at Hummers

These are my first attempts at Hummers, which proved to be very tricky to shoot. Actually, this is only the second time out with the new long lens. I shot mostly with the 810 and a few with the 7100. I think I need to get familiar with one system at a time. I wasn't as happy with the 7100 images and likely just need more time with it.
I do feel that I learned quite a bit today. Any and all critique encouraged.

Outstanding. Please provide the dirty details. Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO, lense. Date, time and location of your classes. I could use some tutoring. Thanks

Macronaunt, If you want to see what the 7100 is capable of take a look at Swamp Gator's photos at: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user_topics_listing.jsp?usernum=6711&page=1 . He has remarkably good, consistent results with that camera. ....... Coot

Thanks! It took some time to get dialed in on the settings. I suspect things will get better as I get more time with the set up. EXIF data of each image should be intact. Just know that I tend to ETTR in raw. I'm still a total noob but, don't mind having someone to learn with ;)

IQ of image #1 is excellent. IMO, a shorter shutter duration would lessen wing movement. Compensate with a bump in ISO.

I would say you are off to an excellent start with your hummers. The first shot is particularly good.

Macronaut Great set and #1 is my favorite but I too have a d7100 so I liked that one too. I agree with nikonian on the wing but the body and flower are spot on. I want to see more.

Excellent shots. I love the first one but all are good. Great capture with the last one showing the bee over the hummer's head. Very well done.

Flash will allow for a faster shutter speed, reducing motion blur, while maintaining a reasonable ISO. It will also remove some of the shadows that are hiding some of the details.

I am aware of what the 7100 can do. So far it seems that proper technique is more critical when using the 7100 rather than the 810. I still need more time with both ;)
