Been experimenting with B & W shots. My question is do I take in B & W in the camera or should I change to B & W once on the computer?
For me, it's a wonderful color photo on the camera and then can play with it converting to B&W on the computer when applicable.

I second that.
You can always take color out but its' hard to get it in when taken in camera! :)
I'd suggest you take color in camera and then convert. There's no sense in throwing away information before you know what you need.
If you are really into b&w you should try Nik Silver Efex Pro. You can use it for 15 or 30 days free but then it's pretty expensive.

I agree, take the photo in colour then convert to b/w in post. A camera typically will give you a flat looking black/white while converting yourself gives you total control. I find to get a good black/white you need to do soem dodging and burning to get the shadows and highlights to pop, hard to do on a file that was shot in b/w.

I watched some pretty good tutorials on this and all say shoot color and adjust in post. The reason why is what was said above but they showed how you can tweak the exposure on individual color channels with fantastic results you would never get if you shoot in B&W. I use Topaz B&W to help with those adjustments and seen some wonderful results for Silver Efex as well.
I suggest you Google B&W tutorials. For Topazlabs.com they have some on their website as well as more in depth ones at Youtube/topazlabs
Have fun
Thanks for all the advice, will take heed and check out some of the sites.

and even after the post processing into B&W;
print in color and not "grey scale" because of the various tone ranges in the image........
I agree with frank. Color and use Silver Efex Pro. Get a good printer. I have an Epson, which I love, but go to a store that has all the different brands. Have them print out b/w for each printer.
Silver Efex Pro is the way to go, only do black & white is your processing.
I agree with other posters, take your best color shot in camera and then convert to B&W on computer. Nik Silver Efex Pro is a great B&W conversion program. Might want to try the trial download to see if you like the results.
Did the free trial with Nik Silver EFex Pro. it is just
wonderful..so is the price !!
ItÂ’s nice to be able to vary the intensity of the grey tones
according to what color they were in the original RGB.
