Have fun and go slow. Of course, a tripod will help with the 500mm shots. Do you have to turn VR off with that lens, or is there a tripod setting - or does it just know?

You might get responses from those owning the Sigma and Tamron lenses. But, yes, I have had this lens for almost 6 months of shooting almost every day. It has been mounted on a D750 and D4s. And yes, it is very sharp at all focal lengths. The sweet spot for me has been f6.3. Yes, my keep rate is almost 97%. I shoot in GROUP AUTO FOCUS using the center spot but your Nikon D800 does not have this focus mode. But, you should still get great photo's. Yes, my good friend at Campus Camera got out both Sigma's and the Tamron, and yes, the NIKON BLEW THEM AWAY BY A LARGE MARGIN. Great purchase, god bless and keep on shooting until the end.

I just got one last week. I went out shooting (sitting) birds with a tripod. I decided the lens was too heavy for me to shoot handheld so just purchased a monopod and tilt-head which arrived yesterday. One of the things I discovered when I tried to mount the lens to my tripod was that the foot of the lens collar was too wide to fit into my tripod clamp all the way. I had to purchase a dovetail clamp to attach to the foot of the lens collar, -now good to go. The attached images were taken from maybe 300 feet. They are cropped.

Congratulations on your new lens.

When you say that it blows away Tamron and Sigma, do you have examples to share?

No examples needed. Facts are facts and those lenses are just not made to the standards of Nikon. Oh, one advantage goes to the Expensive and heavy built Sigma, it is weather proofed. Because of this I cannot take my Nikon lens out in the rain, fog, sand or snow. But, I never do so what's the point.
