Going to national parks in Utah and Arizona in October and would like to know what lens to take. I have a Canon camera and am considering a 24-105mm f/4L or an 18-135mm f3.5-5.6mm. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. Ralph

The 18-135 would seem to have more versatility.

For the last two years, I've carried two lenses with me most of the time. 28~300 and 20mm.

Of the two you mention, I agree with Fred, the 18-135mm.

Never had the privilege of shooting the 18-135mm but I shot the spots off my 24-105mm last summer in Yellowstone. By far the majority of my shots were with that lens. It was my first chance to see the park and I will get another look this spring. The 24-105mm is going with me, among other lens.

there is not an abundance of wildlife in Utah and Arizona, so the 18-135 would be great. if you are wanting to shoot wildlife or birds, you should maybe consider something in the range of 18-300.

You do not mention the body that you will be shooting with. Is it a Full Frame or a Crop sensor. I have both bodies and I have the lens that you have mentioned.

The 18-135 is an EFs lens that is made for the crop sensor. The L lens that you are asking about 24-105 is very well regarded.

I live in the middle of the Park systems either would do nicely. many would like a up to 600mm lens for wildlife and an UWA for scenic, but you can get buy nicely with a one lens solution.

Please let us know about the body!

If the camera that you have is a crop sensor use the 18-135

If the camera that you have is not a crop sensor then you are interested in image quality so then go with the L lens

Have you considered the Tamron 16-300. I am not a professional, but find it to be a very nice lens with a tremendous range.

If you can get a 12 to 24 then you have a grate lens for wide angle shots then for the rest of your shot a a 50 to 500 or 150 to 600 will work well

Of the 2 lenses mentioned and using your statement as that is the option then the 18-135 will be more useful with the wider range.

I would go with the 18-135, of the lenses you have mentioned. I have an 18-140 for my Nikon and love it. I will say, though, if you're buying a new lens, and Canon has an 18-200mm or close and you can afford it - get it. That little extra reach will help more than you think.

Hi Ralph,

Great time to go! I did a similar trip in September 2014. I had Canon 5D M III, 7D. 24 - 70 f/2.8 and 70 - 200 f/2.8. Did not miss much. I think the 24 - 105 is an excellent choice. If you can afford it, consider a used or new Canon 70- 200 f/2.8 II. It is far superior to the 18 - 135. Another option could be renting a lens. Make sure you have a device to upload your memory cards or a sufficient supply with you.

If your pockets are not deep, the 28 - 135 will certainly work for you.
Enjoy the trip. We look forward to seeing some of your photos.

Mark
