Hi,

Has anyone on the site used (or is currently using) the above combination?

I currently have the much cheaper Kenko 1.4 extender and am not happy with the results. I think the picture degradation is such that it is just as good to use the camera and lens without the extender and crop the pictures taken.

I would like to know if the Canon extender works much better? If anyone has the 7D Mk II and the old 100-400 L lens with the Canon 1.4 III extender, are you happy with the results? Is it better than just cropping?

Thanks to all for any replies

Richard

I have the Canon 7D Mk2 and the Canon 100-400 II with the Canon 1.4x III and this combo works great. No photo degradation.

I have the the same kenco extender and I will agree with you on the picture sharpness. I tried the Canon 1.4lll and it seemed to work okay at the camera shop but do to the price I did not purchase it. I went there to try out one of the earlier model of Canon on my 300L lens and it did not work properly. I went the Kenco and it was a waste of money as far as I concerned. I eventual bought the Tamaron 150 600 later and I have not looked back. I have found out in life that the cheap way is usually not the best way and usually cost more than doing it right the first time on most things.

Unfortunately, the original 7D doesn't offer autofocus at F8 with the Canon 1.4 extender. There might be an exception with a third party teleconverter.

The Canon 1.4 III works very well with the Canon 5Dsr, Canon 7D Mk2, Canon 6D and the Canon 5D Mk3.

True. I just don't have deep pockets. It should work with any newer good Canon that comes along in the near future.
This 1.4 III works extremely well with my Canon 5Dsr camera as my many posted photos will show.

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking that, depending on the feedback to my question, I would add the Canon 1.4 III extender to my 7D Mk II and old 100-400 L or look at replacing my 100 - 400 with either the Sigma or Tamron 150- 600 lenses. I don't want to be carrying 2 big telephoto lenses around. I have the 18-135 STM lens which is usually in my bag for wider shots and video. Cost is a limitation and I want reasonably good results without breaking the bank.

If it wasn't for a healthy Income Tax Return last year, I would not have my Canon 5Dsr camera nor my Canon 100-400 II plus the selling of my Canon 6D and some lenses to offset the costs.

There have been a large number of threads on this exact question ( check the search function on tele extenders) including 2 recent ones on the Canon EX 1.4 MKIII + the 100-400L (although most are on the MKII version). Here are a couple:

I use the 1.4X III with a 100-400 mkI on my 7DII. They work fine together.

I'm currently shooting v. II of the lens and mating it with either the Canon 1.4x III or the Canon 2.0x III. My 1 series body will AF using the 1.4x but manual only works on the 2.0x. Many shots are filling the frame and I see no degradation whatsoever. Keep in mind that v. II will minimum focus at about 3 feet, much closer than v. I and I am working at much closer distances and margins than any other lens I have ever worked with. I know too many others who are shooting your version with great results, pros included. Your T/C might be your problem and you could rent, or borrow a Canon to see if your problem might clear up. The focal range of both versions require very steady, precise work. And adding T/C's only makes things more difficult. It takes practice, practice, and more of the above to get the hang of shooting 400mm's extended. Good luck to you and don't give up, keep at it. You will enjoy the results.

I didn't check the insurance and shipping, but you can rent the 1.4x for $28 for 5-days from Lens Rentals that would give you an informed decision on how it works for you. They also have a program that you can buy the rental too rather than sending back.
