Photography functions as a craft that may rise to art in the right hands.

Photography also provides a means to make money for selected individuals.

Photography produces a visual record.

Photography attracts individuals who gain satisfaction from visual expression.

One might say these and other uses of photography differ from each other by the intention involved in doing photography.

Is painting an art form, or a way of making signs, or a way to color houses.?

Photography is many things to many people. I'm not completely certain it can be put in a box, or even should be.

It is definitely an art form, as for recording history, that is debatable!

You have started a conversation that will go round in a never ending circle. Just shoot enjoy and leave scholarly discussions to the boring farts OK!
Or be like me and pee ya pants laughing at the people who drive a bus by day or work in offices 5 -9 but as soon as they pick up their Canik they become full blown artistes!
They are about as artistic as my dogs butt but that does not stop em from believing they are artists.
Sit back giggle like a hyena and try not to get your shreddies damp.
