Cuban Memorial.

Now that our President visited Cuba and in his speech to the Government and the Cuban people was very emphatic on human rights and freedom it occurred to me to show these images to you from the Cuban Memorial, built in the campus of the Florida International University (FIU) not far from where I live.

The Memorial was built a few years ago to honor the victims of that regime. These photographs were made at the inauguration. The light as it was getting darker made me raise the ISO speed in my D70s and the obvious result was noise, clearly seen in the picture of the man playing the horn in front of the crosses. I used the 18-70 f3.5-4.5 AF-S for all shots.

The first shot shows a Cuban woman with the Cuban flag. Notice that I positioned the wooden frame on the left directly pointing at her to strengthen the visual design. The wooden fence was part of a fence placed there for protection.

The following shot is a wall similar to the wall of fallen soldiers of the Vietnam war built in Washington DC. It has the names of young Cubans that fell during the Bay of Pigs invasion and I cannot tell if there are other names that were added. The gentleman in the foreground pointing to one of the names was one of those veterans that spent time in a Cuban jail and was finally released when John F. Kennedy negotiated the release of prisoners with Mr. Castro.

The third shot shows a young man saluting in respect with his horn the crosses that represent the victims of that government. I did not do anything about the grain and I though that perhaps it added to the photograph.

The next shot shows a partial group of the Cubans that met there that day to honor the memories of those fallen. This is a ceremony that takes place every year and it is a great opportunity to talk to some of those veterans that are still alive and went through the invasion like the two gentleman you see in this last shot.

All images were converted using Nik Silver Efex.

Very nice work. This is a perfect example of what 6mp camera can do. In fact the 18-70 lens was the Kit lens for the D70/70s. Sure newer equipment will perform better in lower light and shot faster, but your equipment can still do the job. We still have pictures on or wall of Alaska taken with the same set up that are great. Thanks for posting. Leon

Thank you! As a Cuban-American who came to this country in 1961, at age 4, I thank you for this tribute.

Leon I want to thank you for the courtesy of browsing through these pictures and your nice comments.
I ended up donating the D70S to a local church since I upgraded to the D7000 a far superior tool but you are correct, in good light the D70S performed to perfection and I have enlargements to prove it. 6 megapixels can be a lot of pixels and they were at the time the camera debuted in the market.
If something like this project cannot be done with a 6 megapixels camera that means it cannot be done with another one even with more technology and more megapixels.

Ruby I am also a Cuban American. I have spent 54 years living in this country, now my country and home and I am very proud of being an American although I do not forget my roots.
Thank you for your comments.

Marvelous shots with great and meaningful composition, right on with depth of field and exposure. Plaudits deserved!
