Hi,
I'm new to UHH, but have found everyone so helpful. I posted the question below in the wrong area and Sarge very kindly gave me the correct link. Great community site, I'm sure I will learn a lot from everyone.

I love Macro photography, I have a Canon S3 IS which has a Macro and Super Macro function, the Super Macro range is 0 to 10cm. my partner is upgrading to a Canon 7D and is giving me his Canon 350D, I would like to buy a Macro Lens, I was thinking about the 100mm L IS after a lot of Internet searching, I would also like a a Ring Flash but am not at all sure which one would be best. I would be photographing flowers, butterflies, bugs, mushrooms etc. I would be thankful for any advice but please not too technical, I have only been taking photographs for about 3 years and Definately still a beginner. The photos are of No. 1 Swamp Tigers mating, No. 2 Swamp Tiger, No. 3 Cuckoo-Bee, which I spent about 20 minutes chasing around a bush to get this photo. They are all taken in the wild at Howard Springs, Darwin Northern Territory, 1 and 2 are unedited, 3 is cropped.

Your 7-yo Canon EOS 350D (aka Rebel XT) has an 8.0 megapixel CMOS sensor which measures 22.2 x 14.8 mm and delivers images with 3456 x 2304 pixels. The sensitivity can be set between 100 and 1600 ISO. Crop factor of 1.6x

A 100-mm Canon lens would do nicely with this camera, and just as nice with an eventual upgrade to a higher megapixel camera.

There are several inexpensive lighting set-ups you can use for macro. Here are a few currently used by macro-photographers on this forum: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html

What speedlight do you have available?

If you have a conventional speedlight, you can add an inexpensive O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment, as I use. Other ringflash units have a built-in strobes, and you can pay dearly for the complete system.
