Improving after the fact or are you asking what you should have done this time?

The picture looks fine but about a stop and a half underexposed is all.

Thanks to all who understood I was asking for help to improve this photo, nothing else. For the rest of you I know what to do and how to set a camera. I would rather get a poor picture of a very rare bird than none at all. When I did try to reset the camera the bird flew away. My small movement scared it away. I don't have a camera for every window and lighting condition but I do know birds and to get a few shots fast. I only print 4x6 bird pictures so I'm staying with jpeg it's faster in burst mode. This was the first time I had the camera set to raw.
Thanks to all who understood I was asking for help... (show quote)

Shoot Jpegs. learn how too set camera in manual, Keep ISO low.

After the bird flew away I found I had to set the camera from F9 to F5.6, that's 4 stops before it was set right in manual. I was shooting through a patio window which was tinted and not the cleanest so that didn't help. Lucky I got anything but the D7100 is a fantastic camera for the price.

This is my take on your picture.
In the first place, it is badly underexposed and it is soft. Because of the underexposure noise built up.
I put this sample through Topaz Adjust 5 and Topaz Denoise and I saw slight improvement but in my book still not acceptable.
Underexposure here is your worst enemy.

Oops, f9 to f5.6 is not 4 stops, it is more like 1 1/3 stops. f5.6 to f8 is 1 stop and f9 is about 1/3 stop more.

you need to get that eye brighter and more detail in the feathers
try sharpening it in post processing. You can also crop a bit off the right side

This is a rare albino redpoll. Nikon D7100 camera was on manual and set wrong for low light but I did get a few pictures. I do have a raw photo but too large to upload.

I wouldn't dare try my hand at pp. this image. There are others on here that are much better qualified. I would rather get an imperfect image of a rare sight than get no image at all. I can relate because I have some less than ideal images of a partial albino Wren. Maybe this bird will show itself again when you are outside and prepared. ;)

Best I could do for you. Took into Topaz DeNoise, did curves adjustment and sharpened with unsharp mask. Send me a PM if you want more info.
