Another No.

Most of the reviews will point out that if you already have a 7100, the 7200 is only a modest upgrade.

So if you don't have the 7100 and are shopping both, diligent shopping may close the price gap to $300.... for a modest upgrade?

Not for me. That's a good chunk of another lens, an overpriced tripod, or other less worthy gear. Like a bag, huh? What about a $300 bag?

"overpriced tripod" you got that right- :)

Oh, and doesn't the 5300 require motors in the lens which costs way more for lenses?

It does. All new lenses (since something like 1996) have them. They are faster and more accurate than using a camera body motor.

If buying used lens for a D5300 you should look for AF-S lenses. There are plenty out there.

If you have a stable of old lenses without focus motors that would be a reason to consider a D7xxx.

$300 will indeed get you a nice tripod but isn't close to what you need to pay for the top-of-the-line ones (e.g. Really Right Stuff).

I agree! I've learned a lot just reading through everyone's responses on UHH, no matter the subject. There's something to learn from everyone and the links they post.

The D7100 and D7200 have the ability to use any autofocus lens from the late '70's or early 80's, whereas the D3xxx and D5xxx can only use the AF-S lenses. That's not a bad thing, but there are so many older lenses out there that are very good and can be had fairly cheaply, too. If one has a D3xxx or D5xxx, he/she can't take advantage of those excellent older AF lenses.

I have a D5500, and I can use some of the older lenses. However, they are just manual focus on my camera but take great pictures.

Some current Nikkor lenses don't have built-in auto-focus motors, the very good 50 mm f/1.8D is one I can think of off hand, there are others.

All AF-S lenses have focus motors.

You are right that it is still possible to buy a few non-AFS lenses new. I bought the AF 50 mm for my D800 a couple of years back. But the $100 I saved by not buying the AFS wouldn't cover the price difference between a D5xxx and D7xxx. And it remains the only non-AFS lens I own (out of a dozen).

So how does your opinion of this site that help the op with the question?

As a 68 year old on and off hobbyist I love this forum and don't mind at all when the topic wanders a bit, so long as it is not a real attempt to highjack the thread. So much hate in the world let's try not to vent our spleens here.
