Can not exactly answer your question. I went from a much loved D7000, to and awesome now much loved D7200. Still have and use both.
Did not feel at the time the D7100 was an upgrade enough to buy, but happy I waited for the 7200.
Depends on what you feel is casual, and what your main subjects are.

As most have said, in a word, NO! Check the older posts. However, the only real upgrade is an increased buffer size. So if you want to take lots of photos in RAW on continuous then maybe.

From the D7000, yes, from the 7100, not so much.

Go on You Tube to the "Angry Photographer" (if you can tolerate the vulgarity), or the "Camera Store". Both have good information on the
two cameras. I believe they don't see a big advantage on upgrading to the D7200.

I upgraded from the D5100 to a refurb D7100 about 3 months ago. Looked very closely at the D7200 but the $$ savings from the refurb to the new D7200 went toward a new lens. Very pleased with my decision!

So sad that so many UHH members can not provide a straight answer to a simple question. Instead, the OP mostly gets lectures, irrelevant opinions and additional questions. This thread represents a microcosm of what is wrong on this site and in the world in general.

Read comparisons. If you're deciding between buying one or the other, I'd recommend the D7200.

I waited for the D7200 to come up so I could buy the D7100 at a reduced price. The only perceivable difference you will notice is the buffer size so if you plan on doing a lot of burst shots, go for the d7200. I do some burst shooting but if I do I change from Raw to JPEG (highest quality) and I can burst away all I want with the D7100. I also use the fastest write speed card available (at least at the time) which also helps with the smaller buffer size of the D7100.

This Ain't the Judge Judy Show...and many times there is no one specific straight yes or no answer without an explanation or resources or a websites that can explain a particular fact better than the person responding . And maybe, just maybe someone may learn from something associated with/from something someone else has to say... I for one would prefer knowing why something is or isn't than a straight yes or no. It's called listen and learn.

These are both excellent cameras. The D7100 is still in production, but not for long when the replacement to the D7200 comes out. Probably in another year or so. I saw a good offer on a new D7100 at Best Buy Online with 2 lenses and bag for about $1250.00. I don't know if it is still on Sale. You might want to check it out.

I recommend the D5300 as a much better camera than either.

It is smaller, lighter, takes the same images as the D7100, includes articulated screen, GPS, and wifi, IMHO has a better control system without the unreadable green screen and buttons to fumble over, and costs about 1/2.

No, and I guess I must have missed the part where the D5300 entered into the conversation as a consideration.

Another consideration is resale or trade-in value. A newer model will command a higher price.

I agree it's a simple question. The most simple answers would be yes or no in which case would lead to the follow-up question of why. Presenting ones opinion or point of view which differs from yours doesn't make them irrelevant. Unlike you, most replies here provided an actual answer or asked questions to move the conversation forward. If you don't like what you read here on this thread or this forum, I suggest moving on to a thread/forum where none of that exists.

BTW - my answer to the OPs question; personally, it was worth the extra cost. I could afford it and at the time, I wanted the newest tech out there as I plan on keeping the camera for a good period of time before upgrading.
