there is nothing wrong with refurbished, in fact, they may be better than over the counter new. a refurbished camera has been looked over by an individual tech, instead of going through an assembly line and being spot checked, if checked at all. any new firmware has been installed and any reported problems on the model has been checked and replaced or repaired. the refurbished model comes with a full warranty. you can save money and get a better camera.

I bought my camera new in box. It is working as it should. I don't like to buy open box items because I am afraid they are returns. That is a red flag to me. Refurbs have also been returned but they have been repaired, inspected and certified to be working correctly. My NIB camera hasn't been certified. For this reason, I have no problems with buying refurbished products.

Let's see, the price of a Nikon D810 refurbished is 2499.99. Lets call it 2500 for the sake of argument, at 10% off, that's 250.00. 2500 minus 250 is 2250. Please check my math, any way, that's what the Nikon site has them for.
Lets talk about refurbished, the name itself implies USED, BEEN USED BY SOMEONE, who we do not know and have never met, has handled and put their hands all over this camera. It also implies there was something WRONG with it, otherwise they wouldn't call it REFURBISHED. What was wrong with it, they never tell you. So, what's wrong with telling you. If you bought a refurbished car, wouldn't you want to know what they fixed before you drove it. I think we are being hoodwinked and mislead by all major companies when it comes to REFURBISHED merchandise. It is time to rise up America and fight back, demand to know exactly what was done to a product if it is advertised as REFURBISHED. The name is almost sinister isn't it, think about it, it's REFURBISHED. It was BROKEN (you really don't know if it was broken, BUT), and now it's fixed? So, your buying a used, broken, dirty hands touched it camera with a 90 DAY warranty. That's it America, 90 days or bust. Even Ebay gives you 180 days, chew on that Nikon. GOOD LUCK AMERICA.

a factory refurb doesn't necessarily mean the camera was broken. It could be one that was used as a demo at trade shows, sent to NPS or other Nikon users that the company sponsors to get feedback ( I used to be part of that group - D200, D300, D3, D700, D800). I've also gotten a few 'Factory Refurbs' and other than having a refurb stamp on the side of the box you'd never know they'd been touched when opening the box. Another poster commented about them having been gone over by a certified tech and adjusted, repaired as nec. prior to reboxing and I've also had verified from my Nikon contact (now retired). The only downside in my opinion is 90 day warranty.

I agree with your open box theory. BUT, with new in the box you get a one year warranty, with Refurbished you only get 90 days. Isn't that telling you something, if refurb's are such a big deal, if they were just used at a trade show or sampled by Pro's, why the 90 day warranty, what are they afraid of, what ELSE could be wrong with refurb's. Demand to know what was wrong with it BEFORE you buy. And, if refurbished, in some folks view, is as good as new and certified, WHY NOT A FULL WARRANTY. I tell you friends, something smells, and we are not in Denmark anymore.

Do not expect any issues from refurbished cameras or lenses because the chances are excellent you will never have any.
I like Cameta and they offer a one year warranty on their refurbs.
By the way, do you need so many megapixels?

Bill, I think that you are an army of one. I know of no manufacture that sells broke/used/or mishandled merchandise. I am a Canon guy, but I have looked at Nikon. Look at Nikon material to see their definition, warranty and the like. We all have a right to make our own choices. The problem I have with your manifesto is it is factually inaccurate. and purposefully misleading.

I got my D610, D7100 and D810 as refurbs with the 10% off. All had very low shutter counts and were perfect in every way. The only camera I bought new was my D3200 2 lens kit, I ordered it from Walmart and Cameta filled the order as the Walmart vendor. That was before I found UHH and learned about refurbs. I had to wait about 4 months when I decided to get the D810 because they didn't have them in stock as a refurb for a long time with the 10% off. The highest shutter count of the used ones I got was just over 200 clicks. The camera I have used the most is the D610, over 14,000 clicks on my refurb D610 now and it is still going strong.

Nikon refurbs are always my first choice, but I have no interest in the D8xx series. I'll stick with the D750.
