I had been looking to buy a sony A77 when I came accross your discussion. Can you give me your comments on the A77? So far everyone tells me to buy a Nikon instead...
You are better off buying the a77 for several reasons. You get more bang for the buck. You get more features, faster frame rates, easier to use, and much more over the competition. It also takes just as sharp and clear photos as the new, full frame Nikon d800 which costs about $1,400.00 more. Lenses are also cheaper since the image stabilization is built into the camera body. It is also weather proof. The only downside would be that Sony does not have as many lenses available as Nikon or Canon. However, Sony has more than enough to choose from and they are adding more to their stable all of the time. Here is the great part: You can use Minolta AF lenses which are quality lenses. Most of these can be had for under $100.00 dollars. In addition, if you are also into taking video, this too is 2nd to none. Check out the reviews.

Thanks so much for your input. After reviewing a number of sources I have gone with your suggestions as the best fit for what I think are my needs. The 16/80 Zeiss lens is due in Tuesday, and the Sony 70/300D will follow. I also added a Sony 1.4 for a prime.

This should hold me for awhile. Thanks again.

Thanks for your help.

This is an excellent resource for Sony users with loads of information on lenses, ratings, and real-time pricing:

I also recommend this lens, which I find tends to stay on my Alpha quite a bit, even though I have a full array of lenses: Tamron SP 17-50 mm F/2.8 Di-II XR IF AF
Very sharp.
Hope this helps~

If interested in a Sony 70-400 G Lens, I have one that's ben used only twice that I'd like to sell. Goes for $2000; will sell for $1700 including shipping.

Great list. Thanks for compiling. You mention the Sigma 500mm, are you talking about the Sigma 150-500mm, or the SIGMA APO 500mm 4.5 AF - it looks rare and awesome.

Well, the ones that I have seen photos posted from seem to be the newer 150-500mm.
