Advice needed on Ring light purchase

I’m in the market for a ring light, and though I want a good product, I don’t want to ‘over purchase’ with something that is far in excess of my needs. I’m particularly interested in getting really good photos of smaller insects and spiders. I use a Canon 40D, and Canon ring lights may cost over 500 dollars, while other brands with fewer bells and whistles are available for a fraction of that.

I’ve watched in amazement and tremendous admiration as a number of you post photos that I can only DREAM of taking, and you do it with sometimes bizarre looking equipment you’ve rigged yourself that would make Rube Goldberg proud. Any advice here will be greatly appreciated.

What speedlight do you use with your Canon 40D?

I use a $30 O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment on my standard Nikon speedlight.

I just looked and apparently they don't make one for 430 ex2 on a 7d. At least I couldn't fin it. If this is the case I may have to pop for a 580.

2. Smartflash 46N with circle lens ring - $139.00

Comes with screw on rings to make circle flash match your lens size.

Not so fast!

Is this your speedlight? http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/speedlite_flash_lineup/speedlite_430ex_ii

I found this on eBay:
MODEL: F165
NIKON SB800 + D700 / D3 / D3X / D2X
CANON 430EX/430EX II + 50D 40D 30D 20D 10D 5D 5D Mark II

Is the 7D the same physical size as 5D or 10D?

I also use this Smartflash 46 mostly with my 105mm Micro Nikkor with wonderful results. Picked it up new for under $100 a few years ago after it was mentioned in Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Close-up Photography". It works with TTL so very easy to use.

I would also try the O-Flash attachment mentioned by Nikonian72 (if you already have a decent external flash) before I purchased a high-dollar one.

The 7D is indeed the same physical size as the 5D ( not sure about the 10D )

I was in the same predicament a few months back and figured out I really didn't need a "flash" to provide extra lighting.

I used a circular piece of 1/4 inch plywood, cut a round hole in it and added tabs to I can use a rubber band around my lens shade and added about 20 small LEDs.

After wiring them together, I connected the final wire to a 9V battery and added a small rheostat and an ON / OFF switch.

About $10 later, I can use this gadget to illuminate ( and vary the light intensity ) my subject without creating any heat.

A 9V battery will last weeks if not months as LEDs draw very little current.

Please post a photo of this set up, it sounds interesting.

If I understand the O Flash correctly, you measure the distance between the center of the lens to the flash. I got the F165 for my D7000 and SB-800. Might want to check out the O Flash web page for details. This fits but I haven't had time to use it yet. The F155 would be 155mm while the F165 is 165mm. BTW I have a Sigma ring flash that I have used and it works well with my Nikon 105mm Macro, comes with adapters that attach to the lens and is TTL metering compatible.

I got the O Flash because of Nikonian72 advise and his results speak for themselves!!
