Newbie here. Not really sure what I am asking as I am not sure I really know what this term means.
What does it mean to fine tune your lens and also how does one determine if it needs such? Also how would one do this? Lotta questions but apparently I am a lotta dumb. Thanks for anyone with the time to explain this for me.

You would do well to go to youtube and enter fine tune a lens. You'll have lots of videos to watch.

You can tune a lens, but you can tuna fish.

There is no such thing as a dumb question when one is a newbie at any thing. Unfortunately there are some folks out there who think so. But fortunately they are far out numbered by those who know the answer you seek and are willing to share it with you. Most all in the Macro group on UHH are quite willing to help you with your move into the macro field.
I too am a Newbie to Macro and am looking forward to their reply's to you question.

Several of the newer lenses, especially expensive zooms, have electronic chips embedded in the lens circuitry. These lenses can be electronically 'tweaked' to improve focus at a given focal length. Usually, an additional lens 'dock' is required to actually make micro focus adjustments.

I believe you will need to do those in camera. I suspect Douglas is referring to the newer Sigma lenses.

New members receive far more grace than the ones that have been here for years and are simply being lazy ;)

sometimes a lens will back focus or forward focus, meaning that the area that is in focus is behind or in front of the area you are focusing on. this can be seen by taking photos of a special focusing chart. if this is happening, you can adjust your focus area in camera. google or you tube focus adjustment and you will find several articles about this. if you have a good and friendly camera shop in your area, they may be able to show you how this is done and sell you, or guide you as to where to find, a chart. unless you are very serious about photography, most modern cameras and lenses do not need this procedure done.

As I have a basic Canon Rebel T3i I don't think I have any adjustments to do other than in focusing if there is something I don't know of I would like any info I can get from the group.

You are the wittiest person I have ever countered on a forum. Are you the same in person?

There is no micro focus adjustment on the T3I, but it's an autofocus correction only, so no effect on manual focus...
