First of all, I am not a fan of smartphone cameras. Could be that the one I have is antiquated (a Galaxy SIII - 8 megapixel). Also they don't have viewfinders and the LCD screens get obliterated in sunshine.
A good friend showed me his shirt-pocket camera (maybe 2 years old?) today, and I kind of liked it for it's purpose -- something I would keep on me everyday to grab quick shots of just about anything. The camera is a Panasonic Lumix (Leika lens) model DMC-FH2. 4X optical zoom.
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-FH2-Digital-Stabilized-2-7-Inch/dp/B004HW7KAU I thought from viewing the LCD in playback, the image quality was pretty good. (Haven't seen anything downloaded to my puter yet.) The reviews on this camera -- if you can find one to buy -- are mediocre. But what I really liked about it is that it does have a bit of zoom and the thing is VERY slim at only 3/4 inch. The other measurements being 2.13 x 3.7. My main issue with the cameras is no view finder. So I would be back to a washed out screen in sunshine.
Newer models of this Panasonic line or even brands like Nikon or Sony, etc., do have a pretty small view finder, but the thickness starts growing significantly -- usually about double to around 1.3".
I am probably expecting too much of technology, but does anyone know of a similar camera to the DMC-FH2 in thickness
that also has a view finder?

Any point and shoot with a viewfinder will require that you also invest in a larger shirt pocket.

Give the Leica D-LUX (Type-109) and the Panasonic LX100 a look to see if that may be what you're looking for, though they are thicker than what you mentioned.
This is a good site for looking at the physical dimensions of different cameras.

My shirt pocket camera is a Lumix LF1, about 1" thick.
I would say first off no view finder but for portability, plus awesome zoom, plus water proof and shock proof and will almost fit in your watch pocket. Very small very light and takes amazing pics and video. I have had mine for about 4 yrs now and used it to film underwater at the barrier reef and all over the bahamas and Caicos. Excellent price point also. JMHO
It says it's only rated for 28 ft in depth but I had mine down to 48 feet. It got the bends so bad I could not work the buttons while down. When I surface it was back to normal and has never leaked. Still using it everytime I go fishing or boating.
Nikon aws100
Doesn't the rx100iii and 100iv have viewfinders. They're small.

I just don't think you will find a camera that thin with a view finder. My Canon Powershot A1400 has an optical view finder and is 1.2" thick at the hand grip section (the rest of the body is only half that), so a bit more than what you are looking for. However, it does fit in my shirt pocket nicely... I went hiking with it in my pocket many times in the past.
shirt pocket and p and s don't seem to go together. though I generally don't like them, I keep a Nikon Coolpix in my cargo pants pocket.

A viewfinder is a top requirement for me. Do a Google search for compact cameras with viewfinders and read several of the articles.

Another very good sub-compact is the Canon S110 which also has Manual exposure, Aperture and Shutter Priority, along with several other options not included in your Panasonic.
Alas, no View Finder which I also prefer.
I am also still looking for the elusive P&S with a view finder without going broke.

I normally use a DSLR but have a similar Lumax to take anywhere else and apart from missing the viewfinder it takes quite good pics. My one only shoots JPG's but to prove a point I entered one of the pictures in a local competition and won first in the category.
Look at the Nikon Coolpix S 9900 - lots of manual controls, 30x , shirt pocket size & refurb at Adorama for < $180

Nice camera... but too big for shirt pocket, and no view finder!
