i am going to gatlinburg, tn in june with my family. i was going to rent a lens to take with me. i have a sigma 50-200, and i was thinking about a wide angle (?) unless there are some other recommendations? i was contemplating either the EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM or the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM. i have a t3i.

I have never rented but know several people that swear by it.

I rented a Sigma 50-500 mm lens this weekend for a shoot at the horse track. Very reasonable price at Borrowlenses.com. Unless you plan to use a lens a lot, or commercially, enough to get clients to pay for it, this is certainly the way to go. As far as a specific lens is concerned, that would depend on what you plan to shoot. Have a good time.

I've never rented either, but I'd like to give it a shot at some time to see if I want to invest in decent glass (just have my kit lenses). Problem is, it seems almost every place that rents lenses rents for Canon or Nikon...I have a SONY

I would recommend the EF 16-35 mm f/2.8L Its a great lens.
I'm guessing you'll be taking landscapes in Great Smokey Mt. N.P.??
Between this lens and your Sigma 50-200 you'll have a gap between 35 -50 which shouldn't cause too much heartburn. Of course when you find a scene where you need 40 mm you'll be out of luck.

First I'd see what they have to rent and then make a choice. If they have a 10-22mm wide angle lens, that's what I'd pick for landscapes on your T3i. You probably already have the 18-55 kit lens which will extend your focal range to 55mm.

I just got back last night from Gatlinburg/Smoky Mountains! Last fall when we went to Florida, we rented a 100-400 Canon and a 150-500 Tamron. Last month I purchased one of the Tamrons! LOVE IT! $1069 - reasonable for what it can do. I've used it on a tripod and also hand held.

For scenics I use my 18-55mm Canon.

For pics from the trip see my Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/MeredithImages.

I've rented twice from LensDepot.com and once a couple years ago from BorrowLenses.com -- both good -- Lens Depot a little cheaper - like that they supply the return label and price includes return shipping up front.

I just copied and opened the lensdepot.com link...it was for contact lenses, not photographic lenses

Absolutely try lensrentals.com out of TN. Great prices, huge selection, fantastic service and great people to do business with. I have one of their lenes (ef-s 17-55mm f2,8) on my camera at this very minute.

For your camera I would recommend without any reservation the Canon ef-s 17-55mm f2.8. Great at the wide side, ideal walk around lens, great in low light (f2.8 through entire focal length), tack sharp and has Image Stablization. Perfect lens, but WARNING, you will want to buy one after you rent it.

The canon ef-s 10-22mm would be my second choice, but it is a distant second. Not as flexible. The 17-55 can stay on your camera for the entire trip unless you need some long range tele shots.

Good luck and enjoy your trip.

You might consider the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 it is an excellent lens, and you could buy one for just a bit more than renting the $$ canon L lens.
