David, a trick I've used with jewelry is putty. Just press the brass you want to photograph against the putty. It will slightly dull the specular reflections, but maintain the sheen and shininess of the brass. Afterwards, a simple wipe with a cloth removes the slight coating.

If the problem is reflection, how about using a circular polarizer?

David, how big is the object?
Does it have round areas that will creat specular highlights?
Is it flat?
Will you see yourself in it?
Will it fit into a small light tent?
Different solutions for every application! ;-)
