A couple of weeks ago I purchased a used Canon 17-85mm lens from KEH.
The photo's I took on Monday and they have not been touched at all.
I had my 70D set for aperture at f/9 and ISO 100. I am very pleased at the outcome of these JPEGS.

Now that you have a spectacular lens, your next step is to work on your composition skills. Although these examples will do as quick test images, they hardly will win any awards for visual appeal.

The Canon 17-85 is a nice lens, and I hope you got it at a good price. It's a pretty old model which was replaced around 6 years ago by the Canon 15-85mm. Additionally, while I really don't wish to rain on your parade, I would be remiss if I didn't alert you to a serious problem that has plagued a significant number of copies of this lens as they get older. The aperture flex cable has a tendency to fail making the lens unusable. This is a well known issue with the 17-85. Try Googling it. The cable can be replaced by you for little cost if your very handy and confident with your skills, there are videos on YouTube. Having it serviced professionally would probably not be cost effective. Most copies do not exhibit this problem, and hopefully your copy will be one of them. This was just for your information.

Perhaps, but I suspect well intentioned.
One thing that may immediately improve these test shots, is to brokeh the distracting background by start shooting with the lens wide open and go up from there.

mikedidi46, give it a try (shallower depth of field) and post the results.

Here is a good yet simple Brokeh simulator that really speeds up the learning curve. Worth playing with.
